Kevin Garnett's sweat-licking story: Ultimate mind game or crossing the line?

Boston Celtics legend Kevin Garnett has earned a reputation as one of the NBA’s best trash-talkers. “Nobody could out-talk KG,” highlighting Garnett’s intensity and psychological tactics to get under his opponent’s skin. To corroborate, a former Utah Jazz player has an especially bizarre incident to narrate.

In a recent episode of the PlayersTV podcast, the host asked Deron Williams about the NBA’s best trash-talkers. In a beat, Williams named Kevin Garnett. But when coming to share a story, the hesitation was sure visible. “Man, I don’t even like telling this story,” he began. “We were in Utah, one of my teammates was on the free throw line, and KG, he was pretty active that night… he walked up to him, ripped the back of his neck, and tasted his sweat and said, ‘I know you were sweet’.”

Despite the shock and disgust this story might invoke, Williams clarified that he didn’t believe Garnett actually licked the sweat. He suspected that Garnett only pretended to do so, likely for hygienic reasons. Nevertheless, Williams revealed that the gesture was incredibly disrespectful. This audacious act, whether real or faked, solidified the Big Ticket’s status as the best trash-talker in Williams’ eyes, leaving no doubt about his ability to unsettle opponents.

Interestingly, the Big Ticket’s former teammate and close friend, Kendrick Perkins, also seems to have witnessed a similar incident. Perkins, during an appearance on the PatBev podcast, recalled the event, admitting that even he couldn’t understand how Garnett came up with such antics. Perkins humorously shared that the Big Ticket swiped his finger on the back of an opponent’s jersey, then declared, “This motherf**ker, he’s sweet!”

Kevin Garnett has Jeff Teague never forgetting a certain moment

Kevin Garnett didn’t even spare his teammates from his infamous trash talk. Playing together for about three and a half seasons with the Celtics, Kendrick Perkins and Garnett shared a championship victory in 2008. However, their journey began on rocky terms. During an early encounter, Garnett humiliated Perkins, saying, “You’re trash, like, who is this? Who? Kendrick Who? Nobody.”

Another incident involved the 2021 NBA champion Jeff Teague where the Big Ticket growled at him. On the Club 520 podcast, Garnett admitted, “I told you… I did growl at you.” Teague revealed the lasting impact of that moment, saying, “I ain’t never forget this.”

In that podcast they shared another unusual incident. During a 2012 playoff game between the Hawks and Celtics, Jeff Teague threw down a savage dunk over Ray Allen, giving the Hawks the lead. Teague taunted Allen, but the Celtics ultimately won the game. When asked about Teague’s dunk in a post-match interview, the Big Ticket bluntly said, “I don’t even know who you are talking about. That guy’s a nobody.”

However, the story didn’t end there. Teague shared that Garnett followed him into the tunnel after the game and continued the taunting. “Don’t f*** with the basketball gods; you’re not like that, don’t do that,” Garnett reportedly told Teague.
