Kevin Durant's mom's heartbreaking admission—do you think Shaq's family owes her an apology?

Similar to how many NBA teammates build bonds that last for a lifetime, their mothers often do so as well. There is a sisterhood between NBA moms, as revealed on Andscape. For those who don’t know, Kevin Durant‘s mother Wanda Durant recently spoke of it on the show. She detailed her confined special group meant for the NBA moms. Among the popular names include Shaquille O’Neal‘s mama Lucille, Ray Allen’s mom Flora Allen, and many more. Although she described the group as something that believes in the sisterhood of the mothers, it turns out the ride has not always been smooth.

During the latest episode of TV One’s Raising Fame series, Wanda Durant stated Mama Lucille to be an inspiration and someone she always looked up to. But she also disclosed an instance when she was not so happy with Shaquille O’Neal’s mom. “I remember one time I was mad at you… I was starting to be recognized as an NBA mom, and I didn’t know what to do… And I felt like you left me alone…” she said with tears in her eyes.

The 56-year-old further detailed how there are other NBA moms but the three of them (Wanda, Lucille, and Stephen Curry’s mom, Sonya Curry) are among the ones who got significant recognition. Notably, as the NBA champs and Finals MVPs gained popularity, so did their mothers as well. Apart from this, the three later became popular in their own right through their philanthropic works and much more. It is worth mentioning that Lucille O’Neal, just like Wanda, did not have an easy life either.

She even revealed during the discussion with KD and Steph’s mothers that she had to work on herself. “You can’t help anybody if you’re not in a position to be strong enough to give. And when you give in, you give, and you give in, you’re empty. So you have to back up, and you have to regroup. I’m better today than I was when I told you (Wanda) God got you,” she said. Whatever the core reason could’ve been, it’s clear that even today the three NBA moms are tight with each other.

Not Shaquille O’Neal, Stephen Curry, or Kevin Durant, but the Real MVPs are their mothers

Lucille had Shaq when she was just out of high school and nearly 17 years of age. But as revealed in a 2019 interview with Memphis Parent, she owned up to the irresponsibility. She raised Shaq as a single mom until she got married to Sergeant Phillip Harrison. The couple significantly contributed to Shaq becoming a 4x NBA champ and an icon. But even after Shaquille O’Neal made it big, it’s not as if Lucille never faced any challenge.

During the 2019 interview, she opened up about her struggle with alcohol. As revealed by her, she was not able to quit until she herself realized that since she had major media attention, she had a responsibility to give them something positive to look at. And it could be similar personal struggles that could’ve prevented Lucille from being there for Wanda. Specifically speaking of KD’s mom, Queen Latifah produced a movie based on her life story — The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story.

Additionally, she has also made multiple appearances on some major television networks, including ESPN, NBC, and many more. But it turns out the popularity does not come without a cost, as revealed by Wanda in a discussion with Shaquille O’Neal and Steph’s moms. “If I’m not surrounded with moms like you to have it, it’s a lonely place,” Wanda added. And this was the time period when she needed Lucille, but she felt all alone.
