LeBron's move: A calculated decision or a straight-up betrayal of his Klutch Sports buddy?

One of basketball’s biggest debates will always be about the GOAT: Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant. Kendrick Perkins, who was a loud advocate for King James, often picked him as the greatest. Normally, this wouldn’t raise eyebrows, but fans often link Perkins’ love for LeBron to his paycheck from Klutch Sports. However, things have changed in recent times with Big Perk often critiquing his former teammate. Things took an interesting turn when an old video of Perkins resurfaced online, but this time, not only fans, but former NBA star Rashad McCants jumped in to add fuel to the fire.

It all started when X account named “Thetruth” shared a throwback video of Perkins, pre-Klutch Sports era, with the caption: “Kendrick Perkins before the Klutch Paychecks.” In the clip, Perkins praised Kobe Bryant as the most skilled player, even above LeBron and MJ. “To me, Kobe was more skilled than Mike. When I think of Kobe, I think of him as probably the most skilled guy to ever play the game,” Perkins said, a statement that’s now sparking plenty of conversation online.

What made things more interesting was “Thetruth” adding his own two cents. “Crazy how those Klutch paychecks will have someone calling LeBron the GOAT real quick,” the account posted, hinting that LeBron needs to “pay people” to talk up his greatness.” That wasn’t all. Rashad McCants, never one to shy away from controversy, reshared the post with a cheeky jab: “Let’s not forget!!! 😂😂😂”.

But Perkins’ Klutch Sports connection isn’t new territory. During the last NBA Finals, when LeBron mentioned he missed Kyrie Irving, Perkins chimed in, accusing LeBron of trying to insert himself into the Finals coverage. This led to fans trolling him, saying he had “lost his Klutch paycheck.” Then, in a surprising twist, LeBron unfollowed Perkins on X just days later. It seems no matter what Perkins says, he can’t win.

So, what exactly is the Klutch paycheck? Klutch Sports Group, run by Rich Paul—LeBron’s close friend and business partner—represents some of the NBA’s biggest names. Perkins was once on their payroll, which has only fueled the accusations of his LeBron loyalty.

Kendrick Perkins’ LeBron love sparks debate

Back in June, Kendrick Perkins stirred the pot by revealing an unexpected call from Rich Paul, the CEO of Klutch Sports. Paul wasn’t too happy with Perkins’ takes on LeBron James. Perkins didn’t hold back, though, as per DREAMERSPRO podcast. “I don’t need a phone call from Rich Paul, bro. If you feel some type of way, just hit me. If I was wrong, I’d apologize,” Perkins said.

Despite the drama, however, Perkins maintained his respect for LeBron. Just a month later, during the Paris Olympics, Perkins was back to praising his friend. After Team USA’s victory over France, Perkins mentioned on ESPN’s Get Up that LeBron’s performance might finally put him ahead of Michael Jordan in the GOAT debate. His admiration for LeBron was clear, and the Paris gold only strengthened it.

During the broadcast, Perkins confidently told Mike Greenberg, “LeBron has one up on MJ right now.” He highlighted LeBron’s consistent play throughout the tournament, which earned him the MVP title. This Olympic win was LeBron’s third gold medal and MVP award, adding yet another chapter to his legendary career.

Perkins didn’t stop there. He emphasized that LeBron wasn’t limited by age or position, adapting flawlessly to whatever the team needed. “Everything LeBron did at this age was beautiful to watch in the Olympics. He’s one up on Jordan now,” Perkins concluded, standing firm on his belief that LeBron is his GOAT. It seems like it’s not about which side Perkins is on, but rather about his takes based on particular situations.
