Victor Wembanyama has been the talk of the NBA ever since the French stalwart declared himself eligible for the draft. Chosen as the first overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs, fans have been eagerly waiting for Wembanyama’s debut. This all came to fruition as the NBA Summer League kicked off in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center, with the Spurs facing the Charlotte Hornets. However, the presence of a 6x NBA champion stole the show in Vegas, as did his tribute to the great Bruce Lee.

In a close game where both Wembanyama and Brandon Miller had their moments, it was Victor that drew the first blood. The 7’4 tall Wemby would have been proud to get the chance to showcase his skills in front of arguably the greatest big man in league history.

Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was in attendance as Victor Wembanyama made his debut in the NBA Summer League. The recipient of numerous accolades, Kareem was seen wearing a shirt that depicted a graphic of Bruce Lee and himself.

The graphic was a still from Bruce Lee’s final movie ‘Game of Death‘, where Kareem featured as an opponent to Lee in a now iconic scene. While the scenes between the two icons were filmed in 1972, Lee’s death put a halt to production. With the help of stand-ins, the movie was finally released in 1978, five years after the legendary martial artist’s demise.

After spending 2 years in the Euro League, Wemby was expected to come and light up the NBA. While he didn’t do much in his first game, the trajectory can only move upwards. Suiting up against the Hornets, Wemby’s Spurs beat the recently sold team by a margin of 8 points, with the game ending 76-68.

Wembanyama finished the game with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 blocks in over 27 minutes of action. The versatile forward made all of his free throws but had quite a dismal night in terms of shooting. Attempting 12 field goals, the center only managed to find the net twice, while he sunk 1 three-pointer out of his 6 attempts. Still better than most, Wemby earned high praise from a legendary onlooker, who had few words for Wembanyama.
