The political scenario in the country is flaming hot, and even NBA stars like Magic Johnson are not exempt from the heat. In a debate that drew eyes from around the nation, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump faced off for the first time on Tuesday night, signaling the start of the 2024 presidential race. Hosted by ABC News at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center, the 90-minute exchange was anything but tame.

The two candidates exchanged sharp words on economic policy, past elections, and each other’s leadership styles. Therefore, setting the stage for a contentious campaign season. As per majority reports, Harris seized the spotlight at several moments, challenging Trump on his economic policies, and his stance on key social issues. The Vice President aimed her remarks directly at the middle and working-class citizens. Thus, presenting a vision that she argued would be inclusive and equitable.

Trump, meanwhile, held his ground, defending his past policies and presenting his case for a return to the White House. But the debate didn’t just end on the stage. As the dust settled, members of the NBA community, always known for their vocal stances on social and political issues, were quick to voice their opinions online. Former LA Lakers legend Magic Johnson took to X, praising the Vice President.

“… Kamala Harris did an excellent job of making her case on why she should be President of the United States tonight and I’m so proud of her!” he wrote. He emphasized how she laid out a comprehensive economic plan aimed at lifting the middle class by introducing a $25,000 homebuyer down payment assistance program. And defending the rights of women, while assuring no ban on fracking. In a separate post on X, he praised the 59-year-old for being presidential, confident, intelligent, and staying on course during the debate.

“She did not allow herself to be thrown off or diverted by lies and accusation,” Magic Johnson wrote. He emphasized his belief in her vision for a government inclusive of all people, regardless of race, language, sexual orientation, or political affiliation. Meanwhile, yet another member of the NBA community, George Karl, also echoed his sentiments on social media. “Kamala Harris demonstrated important facts and information tonight. Her intelligence and plans should win out… We’re here to help you finish the job…,” he stated. But the reactions from the basketball world didn’t stop there.

As the political tension unfolded on stage, more NBA and WNBA stars made their voices heard online, weighing in on the performances and sharing their perspectives. Former NBA star Rex Chapman kept it brief and to the point, showing his support for Kamala Harris. “She’s all-class,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, ex-76er star Evan Turner did not hold back on his views about Trump. In a passionate post on X, he made it clear that he doesn’t have time for anyone supporting the former president. Turner further expressed frustration at the idea of people defending Trump’s stance. “Cause yall don’t care about logic so please don’t try to vibe wit me,” he made it clear to the Trump supporters.

At the same time, Phoenix Mercury star Natasha Cloud also weighed in during the debate. “She killing this debate rn. #Kamala4President2024,” she mentioned in a post on X. In a separate post, the 32-year-old bashed the Trump supporters. It’s clear that amid the heated political scenario, the majority basketball community seems to be leaning toward Harris.
