Kevin Garnett and the Timberwolves back together? That doesn’t sound probable with the latest progression of events. KG’s relationship with the Minnesota Timberwolves had highs and lows. The bitter feelings though were at their peak in later years as Garnett clashed with Wolves’ owner, Glen Taylor. However, a change in the old guard is an apparent signal for The Big Ticket’s return to the franchise.

According to an ESPN story, the sale of the Wolves will provide an opening for Kevin Garnett to have a front-office role within the team via the franchise’s star, Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns remains KG’s only fruitful connection to the Wolves and he’s reportedly drawing him back in the fold.

ESPN’s columnist reported, “He has been in a bitter dispute with Taylor and distant from the franchise in recent years.” Yet it didn’t sour his relations with KAT and other players. Taylor is currently closing the sale to new owners Marc Lore and MLB star, Alex Rodriguez. Under A-Rod, the team is expected to undergo major changes, including bringing in veteran guidance.

KG is perfect for this role. After his first 12 years with Minnesota during which he was league MVP, winning an NBA championship with the Celtics and a stint with the Nets, Garnett returned to the Wolves in 2015 which just signed a young KAT. Garnett mentored the 2025-16 Rookie of the Year and is currently extending similar encouragement to Anthony Edwards.

Given Garnett’s influence, the Wolves have been eager to bring him back in an official capacity. This was long overdue but not while Glen Taylor was there.

The sale of the Wolves has been an ongoing process for some years. Garnett’s dispute with Taylor ran parallel with it. In 2021, rumors were rife that KG would join an ownership group to bid on the team. Garnett was quick to shut it down.

Sooo just got the news that this process in trying to acquire the TWOLVES IS OVER for me and my group…,” Garnett stated on his Instagram Story. “Thx Glen for being yourself n what I Kno you to be!!! GOOD LUCK n aww the best with WHAT WE BUILT.”

It’s difficult to interpret KG’s tone as gratitude. The Wolves head honcho has been openly bitter about KG going to Boston. KG too was critical about the lackluster memorial to former Wolves head coach, Flip Saunders. Saunders was a factor in KG’s return to the team with the promise of a front-office role post-retirement. But following Saunders’ untimely death in 2015, Taylor apparently didn’t honor the deal and hired Tom Thibodeau instead.

After Thibodeau was fired, fans anticipated KG’s return. Then too KG outrightly said in 2020, “I don’t do business with snakes,” referring to Taylor. He denied Minnesota the opportunity to retire his number 21 jersey while Taylor is in charge, because: “It’s not genuine.” Now that Glen Taylor is on the way out, Minnesota fans might be getting what they want – the franchise’s hero’s return.
