This brought the 8x All-Star’s total to three children, each carrying a piece of his legacy. However, despite their public personas, Vince and Sondi preferred to keep their family life out of the spotlight. Until an incident brought the couple into the media eye in 2022.

The night of horror that brought the Carter family into the spotlight

In a shocking turn of events, the Georgia home of the former NBA star witnessed a near $100,000 robbery back in 2022. On a night that should have been about celebrating family, the Atlanta Police Department reported that Vince’s wife, Sondi, found herself in a terrifying situation. The information comes as per the then article by the People.

Around 11:50 p.m. on Father’s Day, while Sondi lay in bed with her two children, she heard loud noises emanating from the front of their home. Sondi quickly sprang into action, calling 911 and texting a neighborhood patrol officer.

As she hid inside a bedroom closet with her kids, they could hear an unknown number of suspects rummaging through their belongings in different rooms. When the police arrived, they briefly chased a masked man dressed in all black.

An SUV picked up the suspect, allowing him to escape. Officers recovered $16,100 in $100 bills outside the Carter home. But Vince—who was not home at the time—reported that this was only a fraction of the $100,000 missing from a brown bag he kept in the bedroom closet.

Adding to the alarming nature of the incident, officers found two guns. A Glock and a gold Desert Eagle, the latter belonging to Vince. It even raised questions about the intentions of the suspects and whether they had any ties to the former basketball star.

Investigators noted the suspects gained entry through a first-floor window that was completely broken in. A gate was also broken off its hinges and multiple rooms were left in disarray. Thankfully, no victims suffered any harm — a small relief in a disturbing situation. Not only did the incident had a financial and mental toll on the Carter family, but brought them to the spotlight. Something that Vince Carter had avoided so far.
