The father-son duo of the Ewings have been making significant strides in their respective basketball career. Most NBA fans would know by now that Patrick Ewing has rejoined the New York Knicks as an ambassador. A franchise to which he dedicated almost all his NBA career. Under the new role, he will assist both basketball and business operations for the team.
“As I said the day my number 33 jersey lifted into the rafters at MSG, I will always be a Knick and I will always be a New Yorker. I can’t wait to get started in this new position and to officially be back with the organization that I love so much,” Ewing said in a statement. But what about his son? Is he associated with the NBA in any capacity like his father? Let’s find out what the 40-year-old has been up to through his basketball career.

If you’ve ever wondered whether Patrick Ewing Jr., the son of the legendary Patrick Ewing, is still involved with the NBA, the answer is—not quite. In fact, he never really had a long-term NBA career. However, he played for quite some time in the NBA G-League (back then known as the Development League). His initial seasons in the development league came as quite impressive, even earning him a D-League All-Star appearance in 2011.
But unlike his father, the 40-year-old never managed to make it big in the NBA. With time, his D-league stats declined. And as a result, he could manage just 7 games in the NBA with the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans). He also had a brief stint with the Knicks, but that was only limited to the 3 pre-season games he played with the team in 2008 until the team waived him off.
However, the son of 11x All-Star found his place in the overseas basketball scenario. This included Germany’s BBL, Spain’s Liga Endesa, and some other appearances in Greece and Qatar. Yet, his involvement in the overseas basketball scenario was not limited to his role as a player. So where is he now, you ask?
Well, Patrick Ewing Jr. has once again found a major place outside of the NBA. Yes, NBL1 North’s South West Metro Pirates recently announced the 40-year-old as their new head coach for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. The best part is that he’s no stranger to the team. He has already served as their lead assistant coach just last season.
