Dwight Howard, like many other NBA icons, decided to enter the realm of ownership. After playing a few years for the Asian Basketball League in China, Howard became a part owner of the Taiwan Mustangs. The 2020 champion made this announcement just a few hours ago and now he has already come up with a recruitment plan for it. This is indeed delightful news for basketball buffs, but looks like Howard’s aggressive plan might turn out to become a problem for the NBA.
After becoming the part owner of the Taiwan Mustangs, Howards shared, “We gone make my league great like the NBA ! I’m recruiting as we speak”. Over the last few years in the NBA, youngsters have started to take over the game, which makes it quite hard for veterans who are above the age of 30 to get some minutes in the game. Players like Demarcus Cousins, Isaiah Thomas, etc. who made a name for themselves in the league, are already out of the scenario. It looks like Howard might make use of it.
The Orlando Magic legend wrote on X today about the seriousness behind his idea of turning the Asian Basketball League into something like the NBA. The 3x DPOY tweeted, “This ain’t no Jackie Moon this Frfr…Wait till y’all see the NBA players joining my league…just know they legends!” On top of this, he also requested his fans to help him in scouting, which they have already started.

Howard has hilariously mocked a lot of NBA superstars after their disappointing playoff exit, by requesting them to join him in China. This has been a trend since the last playoffs. At times, he has also made a case to return to the NBA, to help teams avoid elimination in the following seasons. Ultimately, things have got serious now, so do not be surprised if you see stars from the NBA play in the Asian Basketball League.
Dwight Howard’s interest in ownership was not newfound
Howard has been a part of the Asian Basketball League for more than a year now. His ownership interest started as soon as he entered this league. He shared, “Last year after the first game I played in Taiwan I looked over…and said, ‘Man, I’m going to start my OWN league one day where former NBA players, top college recruits, and elite international players can still get a stage to showcase to the world how great they are.”
One would have laughed at Howard if he had shared this a year ago. However now, this might be life-changing for not just Howard, but a lot of basketball players around the world. Money making and business are two aspects that make a league successful. For instance, rapper Ice Cube’s Big 3, has made a name for itself in the international market.
