“It means everything, just seeing his face whenever I got drafted, how happy he was.” Sacramento’s latest recruit, Devin Carter, was over the moon seeing his father on Wednesday night. Athletic genes run in the Carter family. Defensive versatility and elite rebounding skills are some of the points that convinced the Sacramento Kings to pick Devin Carter in the NBA Draft. The 22-year-old seems to have learned it from his father. Carter’s father Anthony Carter is a former NBA player. He spent around 13 years in the league playing for 6 different teams.

The 49-year-old is still a part of the league. He is the assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies. After retirement in 2013, Carter coached a team in the NBA Development League. Following this, Carter joined the Sacramento Kings as an assistant coach in 2015. He has worked with his former team, Miami Heat, as well. This was when Anthony and his family moved to Florida.

Miami is also where the 49-year-old began his NBA journey. When Carter went undrafted in the 1998 NBA Draft, he played that year for the Yakima Sun Kings of the Continental Basketball Association. At the end of the year, Devin’s father finally landed the opportunity to play for the Miami Heat.

After the Miami Heat, Carter played for the San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves. In 2007, Carter inked a deal with the Denver Nuggets. The former NBA player renewed his contract twice with the Denver Nuggets in 2009 and 2010. Back in 2011, the Nuggets formed a three-way deal involving the Minnesota Timberwolves. It saw Melo and Carter join the New York Knicks.

The 6’1 guard gained traction leading the Knicks to a win over the Celtics in the same year. He also had a successful college career playing for the Saddleback Community College. Following this, he joined the University of Hawaii, becoming one of the 10 players to reach the 1000 points milestone. Nonetheless, he will be hoping his son goes on to achieve bigger and better things in the NBA.

Devin Carter greeted the Sacramento Kings fans

After being selected by the Sacramento Kings, the 22-year-old was seen greeting Kings fans in a clip he made right there at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. In the clip, Devin said, “Kings fans, what’s going on? Devin Carter here. Just got drafted, super excited to get ready to work. Just wanted to let y’all know you’re getting a competitor, somebody who’s ready to win Day 1, and let’s go. Light the beam.”

Speaking of his father during this emotional moment, Carter said, “It means everything, just seeing his face whenever I got drafted, how happy he was.” He further said, “He didn’t get a chance to get drafted, so just seeing his face and how excited he was for everything we’ve been through, working out, countless hours throughout the night, the morning, just a very special moment.”

Carter is a brilliant scorer and proved his point during his time with the South Carolina Gamecocks and Providence Friars. His addition will complement Malik Monk, De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis and more.

Talking about his teammates, Devin shared, “I’d love to play alongside Malik Monk, De’Aaron Fox. I think we have a great big in Sabonis, probably one of the best passers in the NBA from a big standpoint. I’m just ready to be a two-way, versatile player, get stops on one end and I can also create some offense not only for myself but for my teammates on the other end.”

Apart from scoring, Carter will need to improve his three-point shooting to make a difference. It will be interesting for the fans to watch the veteran coach’s son making an impact on the league.
