Even though the NBA is trying to implement new changes, the results aren’t a guarantee. Even though we have a few hits like the Play-In games, others aren’t always ideal. Their latest plans for the season became a hot topic of discussion for the TNT crew. While everyone has their personal skepticism and reasoning, Charles Barkley doesn’t see the motivation behind the move. Further, he thinks the players might also follow suit.

Regardless of the specter of life you look at, change is a constant. However, in the case of sports, that change isn’t always welcome. In fact, 9 times out of 10, it draws criticism and pushback. That is the unfortunate scenario that the NBA finds itself in.

Charles Barkley is not on board with the new tournament

It isn’t a case of Chuck being unreasonable. Rather, his doubts present an interesting component of the newest addition to the NBA calendar. An emphasis on the relatively “dead” part of the schedule, by way of a tournament, needs some kind of return. Otherwise, the players could simply choose to not care. In light of that idea, the NBA made cash prizes available for winners, best players, and the like. However, the dynamics don’t make sense to the former Philadelphia 76er.

“But I?m not sure $500,000 is a lot of money to these guys.” Further, the tournament has no prestige to it. “If you win the in-season tournament and don?t win the big championship, like, do you put a banner up for the in-season tournament? I don?t think so.”

The rest of the crew also had similar ideas. In particular, Charles’ rival-in-chief, Shaquille O’Neal also had to agree with his usual sparring partner. “I wouldn?t want to be known for winning back-to-back in-season tournament championships. I guess you could rate it similar to having an All-Star ring or MVP trophy…But it?s not something I?m circling down on my calendar,”?he told USA Today.

Due to the relative lack of history behind the tournament, its value is in question. Moreover, the lack of history hurts its perception and prestige. However, Kenny “The Jet” Smith had a different outlook.

Going against Charles Barkley’s opinion, Kenny offers optimism

When play-in games first became a thing, they were a product of necessity. Due to the lack of a full schedule in the 2020 season (COVID-19), teams could viably question their standings over the course of the entire season. As a result, the knockout-style elimination games became part of the calendar.

However, when they stuck around, criticism was aplenty for the move. LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers was among the primary people against the idea. Kenny himself wasn’t on board, initially. But, as he explains, “Now, we?re all waiting, like who?s gonna be in the play-in? Who?s gonna get one more win? Now the play-in?s exciting. So hopefully, they?re foreseeing things that we haven?t.”?
