The duo Shaquille O’Neal and the late, great Kobe Bryant was a menace on the court. These two went on to three-peat in the NBA championship in 2000-2002. They made their way into another NBA Finals in 2004 but ended up losing. Despite such an incredible success story, these two never got along in their NBA days.

The HBO’s Winning Time team is trying to capture the infamous feud between the two LA Lakers legends in an upcoming series. Executive producer and writer Rodney Barnes told The U.S. Sun about the upcoming project that aims to celebrate Kobe’s legacy and the drama that unfolded in the Lakers camp.

Barnes said, “A lot of the people that were a part of [the story] — Jerry West, even the end of Coach Riley, Jeannie Buss, Dr. Buss — there’s still a part of the story even into the Shaq Kobe years as well. So, there is more story to tell, big time. And they were champions. They won a bunch of championships too. So there is a story there that’s connected to the Showtime Lakers well.” There is much more to this upcoming project and it is not mainly about the feud that Shaq and Kobe had. This series will be based on the legacy that Kobe has left behind and it will be a celebration of his achievements.

Winning Time team to bring Kobe Bryant’s legacy to the screens

HBO recently canceled Winning Time because the show failed to connect well with the fans. However, despite an unfortunate end, the show’s future is already being developed with something that is going to excite the fans so much more. Shaq and Kobe’s feud is one of the most talked about issues in the history of the game and Kobe’s legacy alone is enough to capture the interest of everyone who was a fan of the great man.

Barnes said that this is going to be an attempt to “celebrate his legacy.” He said, “The legacy of the Lakers, there’s so much story there that fits drama and the classic sense of the word that goes beyond sports.” The executive producer said that they’ll talk to Vanessa before making major moves in the right direction to bring this story to the screens. He said, “I think out of respect for him, were it me making that call, I would have to [do it] all day.” Although Shaq and Kobe’s history is often associated with their feud, the Big Man has stated on several occasions that the fallout that they had should not be termed as a feud. So, it’ll be interesting to see what he thinks about the project.
