The 2015-16 season was the last time Kobe stepped onto a basketball court as a professional athlete. While there wasn’t much hope from the Lakers for a championship run, the defining moment for them was Kobe’s retirement. Seven years later, his jersey and shoes were put up for auction and the earlier predictions were that they would sell for about $600k.
On the day of the auction, however, his uniform was sold for $305,806 which was expected to go for over $500k. Kobe’s shoes were sold for $98,525 while the expected number for the same was over $100k.
Bryant’s previous season was marred with injuries which is why fans didn’t get to see him as much. So with the 2016 season, where the Lakers were one of the worst teams, many were looking forward to seeing their hero in action for the last time. The LA franchise registered one of their worst series runs with a 17-65 record.
As their season inched toward an end, the last road game and then the home game were all that there was left. The 5x NBA champion wasn’t at his absolute best during his last away game as he played for just 19 minutes and scored 13 points. The Lakers lost that game to OKC 112-79.
