Every basketball player dreams of the draft night. It’s the night that all their years of hard work finally pay off. However, for some, that moment is equivalent to a nightmare. Recently, NBA veteran Rashad McCants talked about how then-NBA commissioner David Stern ruined the day for him.
McCants said that he was initially a third pick in the 2005 NBA draft. However, because of Stern, he was dropped to the 14th overall pick. The NBA veteran also made claims about the league being “rigged” to benefit certain franchises and athletes.

McCants was recently in conversation with Anton Daniels who asked him about his big NBA break. He was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 14th overall pick in the first round. He said that it was supposed to be his “dream come true” moment, and he had it all planned in his head. McCants said that he was just supposed to go on stage, shake hands, wear the cap, and say “Mama I made it.” However, as per the NBA veteran, it was “the first time in 20 years that David Stern had ever fuc**d up”. He said “I was a top three pick” but he slid down to the 14th spot because of a false image created around him.
McCants said that he was dubbed as an “uncoachable player” in the league and that is why no teams wanted to make him a part of their organization. As per McCants, what was supposed to be his big career-defining moment, turned into a nightmare pretty soon. He said that when his name was called and he got on stage, Stern was not even paying attention to him. McCants believed it to be his big day and yet, he was not even being welcomed on the stage so he had to tap on the commissioner’s shoulders to draw his attention.

Rashad McCants explains why the NBA is rigged
The NBA veteran also said that the NBA is “all the way” rigged because of the way it operates. He said that certain players falling into organizations that they have no association with is a major indicator of the same. McCants said that Victor Webmanyama going to the San Antonio Spurs doesn’t even make sense because there is no connection there.
He said that during his draft “Portland had the third pick” and him being from North Carolina, the projection didn’t make any sense to him. McCants said that he couldn’t even carry his fan base to Portland, so it was unnecessary for him to be sent there.
