Slight jabs and jokes are fun but shouldn’t spiral out of control. That’s what happened with NBA official Tony Brothers. Former NBA player Jeff Teague once revealed how one of Tony’s malicious jokes on the court offended him. Teague was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks and later he joined the Atlanta Hawks. In the latest episode of his podcast, ‘Club 520,’ the retired NBA player recalled the entire incident. Here is what happened.
During one of the Hawks’ games against the Pacers, the NBA official made a derogatory remark about the player’s mother and aunt, which naturally triggered him. Even if Brothers apologized for the misbehavior, Jeff Teague wasn’t pleased with it. “I was on the Hawks, and we were playing the Pacers. My momma and my aunt were sitting courtside, and they were cheering every time I came into the game,” Teague said.
He further added, “Then Tony Brothers pulled me to the side and was like, ‘Who them h*es?’ I lost it. He was apologizing, and I was like, ‘n***a, that’s my momma,’ I started to go crazy. And he like keeps apologizing… When he said that s**t I went so crazy, I said, ‘I’ll slap the s**t out of there.’”

Players’ conflict with officials isn’t a new thing in sports. However, the issue has begun to get more complicated in the NBA, as Teague is certainly not the only one with issues.

The problem of inconsistent officiating continues after the Jeff Teague incident
As many have already expressed their views on it, there are many complaints about the lack of calls. Or sometimes just the opposite, with too many calls. We have just recently witnessed Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams publicly argue over how the Pistons have struggled because of the inconsistent officiating.
Another problem is too many technical fouls and ejections. Victor Wembanyama got a tech for bouncing the ball hard. What’s making the noise on social media is how players have argued about officials getting personal while making judgments. NBA player Chris Paul previously noted that it was the feud with NBA official Scott Foster that resulted in too many ejections.

In the Warriors’ latest game against the Indiana Pacers, Paul got technical fouls for calling him, “Tik Toker.” “Tony [Brothers] … He’s talking to me. I talked back. I called him a TikToker, and I got a tech,” Paul said during the post-game conference. What is your take on this? Let us know in the comments section below.
