Dwyane Wade has a lot to flex. You can talk about his championship rings. But then there’s more stuff like a team of lawyers always ready to jump in with both feet. Interesting, right? Just a few years ago, he had to fight a legal battle so his eldest daughter, Zaya, could live the life she wanted. For Wade, that might be the best thing to flex, even if he learned it the hard way.
Wade recalled going through numerous struggles and legal battles during his appearance on WNBA rookie Angel Reese’s podcast, ‘Unapologetically Angel’. The most controversial ones were with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches. And that taught him the importance of good lawyers.
“It was tough like I went publicly, I went through a divorce, I went through a custody battle, I went through lawsuits, I went through a lot where my life changed to become like I got so many now I start having so many lawyers I’m like well I got lawyers now,” Wade recalled.

Soon after his divorce, Wade fought for full custody of his children against his ex-wife and won the case in 2011. The next case was when he went to court again to legally change his daughter’s name when Zaya came out as transgender in 2020.

Throughout the custody battle, Wade’s children were his top priority, and he had no one to guide or support him. “I really didn’t have too many people I could reach out to to say, ‘Bro, how’s the process?’ Or give me confidence that I even can stand a chance. It was uncharted waters, but it was all about just being in my kids’ lives,” Wade explained.
Dwyane Wade’s lengthy divorce from Siohvaughn Funches
He has many lawyers and advisors now to guide him. But no matter how tough things got in the past, he never wavered or gave up. Not to forget, Wade’s divorce cost him a fortune. One thing about Wade’s divorce from his wife was that it wasn’t easy. He filed for divorce in 2007, and it turned into a long, ugly battle, with Funches often staging protests.
Initially, she demanded that Wade pay $25,000 per month in spousal support and an additional $10,000 for travel and other expenses. However, the case was finally settled with Wade having to pay around $5 million to his ex-wife, a decision that came six years after he filed for divorce.
