Can the NBA's response to Singler's situation inspire more open conversations about mental health in sports?

In an unexpected turn of events, the NBA community has put rivalries and debates aside and is united in their concern for Kyle Singler. The former Duke star had a short stint in the NBA and overseas before retiring in 2019. He had played eight years of professional basketball but later faded into the background. However, his recent social media activity has made him a hot topic again, but for concerning reasons. Singler’s recent video was alarming to fans as well as NBA pros. Even Michael Jordan’s eldest son couldn’t hold back his concern while Singler’s fellow athletes reached out.

On Tuesday, Singler posted a couple of Instagram videos of himself shirtless in a somewhat bare room. In the first video, he says, “I need to make an announcement, because I feel like my voice is getting silenced and every day, s–t is being thrown my way. My community, f–ked. I have been mistreated and abused, neglected, made into a mental example and I fear for my life every day.

Singler conveys being mistreated by his community, although the video is not conclusive still. Referring to his house, he says that he tried to bring his family together, start a new career, and keep playing but “everybody has played me into a fool.” He makes cryptic references to being held “hostage” and false narratives before the video ends abruptly.

About ten hours later, he made a third post similarly. “Sending prayer and gratitude to everyone tonight,” he says. He’s still cryptic, making statements like “Know the light,” and “Fear the dark.”

These are the only posts on Singler’s page, and he has not made any other updates as of this writing. The situation was alarming to everyone watching. NBA personalities reacted with concern about his mental health, extending help, and praying for his safety.

Michael Jordan’s eldest son, Jeremy Jordan, was among the many people who commented supportively on the post. He stopped at a joined hands emoji, but his sentiments are palpable. However, the biggest response has come from Kevin Love.

The former Miami Heat star commented “I love you Kyle. Hit me whenever. Please.” He commented on the other posts too and wrote on X, “To everyone who has spent time with Kyle Singler and whose lives he has touched – please shower him with the love and support he needs+deserves. I would not be who I am today without him. I am forever indebted and love him. To the NBA family, Duke BB family, & South Medford community – let’s show up for one of our own.”

Home Alone star, Macaulay Culkin was also one of the celebrities who commented. He wrote, “There’s so much love for you in this world. You are not alone.” His teammates and trainers from South Medford, Duke, overseas, and the NBA flooded the comments to let him know that he can always talk to them.
