Born in Hamburg, Arkansas, Scottie Pippen grew up alongside his 11 siblings. His father, who worked in a paper mill, was paralyzed on the right side after an injury. It wasn’t easy for Pippen to reach where he is now without his determination. Playing for the University of Central Arkansas and becoming one of the elite players in the NBA, Pippen was an inspiration for the people in Arkansas who watched the kid make history. Now, years later, the 6x NBA champion received massive honor from the place where he grew up.

Drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics, Pippen went on to play for 17 seasons in the pro league. But before that, his basketball journey began in Arkansas. Finally, Pippen is recognized for his work on and off the court by the Arkansas State Legislature. Taking to his IG, Pippen wrote a heart touching message. 

“Humbled to receive this recognition from the Arkansas Senate today. This journey started in Arkansas, where I learned the lessons that shaped my career and life. Forever grateful for the love and support from my home state! 🙏🏽” he wrote. 

Senate Resolution 35, supported by Senator Mark Johnson from Conway, bestowed upon the 7x NBA All-Star the honor of being one of the legendary players from the state. It also honors the retired NBA player’s struggles and tough start. Despite being one of the most talented, he did not receive any college scholarships!

“Scottie Pippen led Hamburg High School to the state basketball playoffs and was named to the all-conference team, but no colleges recruited him or offered him a basketball scholarship at that time, yet he was offered a position with the basketball team at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway as student manager of the team,” the resolution stated.

He was extremely good at his game. But unfortunately, it took some time for people to understand his true worth. He didn’t join his college team as a player when he finally got the chance

Scottie Pippen didn’t start his college life as a player for the team

Pippen played for Hamburg High School. He even led his team to the state playoffs and earned several accolades. But that didn’t guarantee him college scholarships. After head coach Don Dyer noticed Pippen, the then-player was able to join a small school near his hometown, the University of Central Arkansas.

But the coach didn’t promise him a team spot. He joined simply as the equipment manager, responsible for looking after the balls and other equipment. As he continued to work hard, Pippen tried to convince his coach to give him a scholarship, and he finally landed one. “I go back, ask the coach. I was very persistent, and he finally gave me a  scholarship,” the Chicago Bulls legend said on The Last Dance.

Since the University of Central Arkansas played in the NAIA, Pippen didn’t get much media coverage. Despite that, his talent was noticed by NBA scouts. He was already a great player, and during college, he improved even more. Finally, he declared himself for the NBA, and the rest, as we know, is history.
