What does it take to lead an organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of basketball legends? The National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) seems to have found the answer in a former Toronto Raptors star.
If you’ve not been able to guess it yet, NBPRA has found its next leader in Antonio Davis. The organization has named him the new Chief Executive Officer and President. With his wealth of experience on and off the court, Davis will be guiding the association into an exciting new chapter.
According to the NBRPA’s official press release, Davis will be responsible for shaping the organization’s strategic vision. He’ll be managing business operations and enhancing services for its members. Based in Chicago, Illinois, he will also focus on growing the association, ensuring it remains a vital resource for retired basketball players.

Now some fans might wonder what makes Antonio Davis the perfect fit for this role. Let’s take a look at his journey. Over his 16-year professional basketball career, the 01′ All-Star built a reputation as a dedicated and highly talented player. He suited up for teams like the Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, and New York Knicks. He even earned himself a spot in CIAA Hall of Fame in 2020 for men’s basketball.
Meanwhile, beyond the court, Davis served as President of the National Basketball Players Association. And became a familiar face as an ESPN analyst and Sirius XM NBA Radio co-host. Following the latest update, Chairman of the Board Charles Smith captured the sentiment perfectly. “We are delighted to have an executive of Antonio’s caliber leading our organization,” he said in the press release.
Antonio Davis himself shared his excitement, saying, “I’m honored to be entrusted with leading this organization. And I look forward to representing this diverse membership consisting of NBA, WNBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotters Legends as we head into a promising future.”

What exactly is the functioning of NBRPA?
Have you ever wondered what happens to professional basketball players after they hang up their jerseys? For those who transition out of the game, the NBRPA has been a guiding light since its founding in 1992. Spearheaded by legends like Dave Cowens, Oscar Robertson, Dave DeBusschere, and veterans Dave Bing and Archie Clark, the NBRPA was built with a purpose.

Interestingly, Bing’s leadership extended beyond the court—he also served as the 74th mayor of Detroit from 2009 to 2014. At its core, however, the NBRPA is about support and giving back. With a mission to help former players thrive after their playing days, it encourages them to use their influence to teach and promote basketball in their communities.
And it’s not as if this is just about the NBA. The association proudly serves over 1,000 members from the NBA, WNBA, ABA, and even the Harlem Globetrotters. Now with a star like Anotonio Davis who himself played 13 seasons in the NBA taking up the charge, things look promising than ever.
