The NBA seems to finally be moving away from the Super-Team era. However, times were different earlier. Despite Kevin Durant and LeBron James being the poster children for the creation of super-teams, one team did it before them. Even though history has multiple such examples, the first “new” super-team was the 2008 Boston Celtics. However, building them up was a very tall order. While they eventually did manage to come through, head coach Doc Rivers went into details about the circumstances around acquiring their biggest piece – Kevin Garnett.

But the unwillingness from KG, and already on the team Paul Pierce, was a blessing in disguise for the squad. “Paul, I’ll give you credit. Because in a generation where everybody wanted to leave. Kevin, you too. We had to beg you to leave.”

The best thing you did for us is say no. Because we ended up with Ray [Allen], you and… If you had said yeah first, it wouldn’t have worked. But we had to make that trade.” Because of his loyalty to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Garnett wasn’t ready to make a switch, saying no. As a result, Boston made a deal for Allen, who the former MVP has finally mended fences with.

Once the team had 2 pieces, Kevin was ready to join, as both Doc and Pierce would jest with him about. “Now he wanna come.” The 2008 Finals MVP, too, would chip in, claiming, Now he wanted to get some cinnabons as the team already had sauce ready to go.” But the process still had a long way to go. “I didn’t think we could get him. And we’re golfing. Me and Kevin McHale and Danny [Ainge] were golfing.”

But, the former Celtics legend has just one demand from his former team to acquire The Big Ticket.

What would it take to get Kevin Garnett?

Whoever is the youngest, best big man in the league, that’s all I need. And we can get that and we can just figure out.” Immediately, Rivers was on board the idea. Because “We had Al [Jefferson]. And I’m thinking Al was the best young big man in the league.”

Understandably, Doc was overjoyed, believing he had the pieces to get all 3 pieces that he wanted. Talking to Danny afterward, Rivers would send the message across, with every name on the team except a select few available for the Timberwolves. With everyone coming in with the same mentality, the goal was simple.
