Can La La and Melo's co-parenting success inspire others to prioritize their kids over personal differences?

“Every day isn’t going to be peaches and roses. It’s just not realistic.” That’s how La La Anthony once described her journey of co-parenting with her ex-husband Carmelo Anthony. Life post-divorce is never easy, but La La and Melo have managed to keep things amicable, especially when it comes to their son, Kiyan. Whether it’s showing up courtside together or navigating life’s curveballs, these two have stayed in each other’s orbit. So some playful banter wasn’t far.

Appearing on his father’s podcast, 7PM in Brooklyn, the young guard revealed he’s following Melo’s footsteps to Syracuse. But it was another surprise when La La joined the episode. As she entered, she greeted co-host The Kid Mero with a hug, exchanged a quick “hello” with Melo, and then hugged Kiyan and sat down right by his side.

“What’s up, y’all? What’s going on?” Melo asked, breaking the ice. But La La had her own question: “Are they (fans) going to talk shit because I didn’t give you a hug?” Melo, unfazed, reassured her, “It’s all good. We far away,” filling the room with laughter. However, soon after, both Melo and La La hugged each-other. Then came her playful teasing: “Hello, baby daddy,” followed by a sharing of a few pleasantries.

La La and Melo, who tied the knot in 2010 after years of dating, split in 2017 but have stayed committed to co-parenting. La la even said that she will keep the Anthony name until Kiyan joins NBA. During Fanatics Fest in New York City, La la also said, “wherever my kid is at, that’s who I’m rooting for.” And she wouldn’t be alone with the sentiment.

Just months ago, the former couple sat side by side at the SLAM Summer Classic, cheering on Kiyan as he played alongside top high school stars like AJ Dybantsa and Caleb Wilson. So despite their differences, the former couple always comes together for one who matters the most.

La La Anthony on co-parenting with Melo

During her recent appearance on Baby, This is Keke Palmer, La La Anthony didn’t hold back about the ups and downs of co-parenting with Carmelo Anthony. “Every day is not gonna be peaches and roses. It’s just not realistic,” she shared, keeping it real. But for La La, it’s always about keeping her son, Kiyan, at the center of everything. “You gotta make it not about you and about them,” she added. Her message was clear: kids see everything, and setting the right example matters.

I wouldn’t want to set the wrong example for Kiyan,” she explained. Whether it’s about relationships, parenting, or co-parenting, she’s always mindful of how her actions shape him. Even on tough days, she pushes through for his sake, knowing that every move teaches him something about how to treat people.

La La also touched on the emotional weight kids feel when their parents aren’t together. “All kids, at some point, want their parents to be together,” she said. While she couldn’t give Kiyan that, she’s determined to show him that his parents can still be friends and make decisions rooted in love. It’s a lesson she believes will shape how Kiyan handles relationships in the future.

For anyone who’s seen La La and Melo side by side at Kiyan’s games, her words resonate. They’ve mastered the art of being in the same space, focused on what truly matters—their son.
