For a man who raked in nearly $200 million during his NBA career, would you expect $1,000 to ruffle any feathers? Well, think again! For those unaware, Dwyane Wade made $196 million from his earnings as a player. But if we know the 3x NBA champ for anything apart from his domination as a shooting guard, it’s his strategic investments and financial management. No wonder a fine that seemed unfair at first prompted D-Wade to get involved in a scuffle with none other than the Miami Heat assistant coach, Keith Askins himself.

The discussion regarding this emerged in the recent episode of Udonis Haslem’s The OGs podcast. The story takes us back to when Wade and LeBron James—The Flash and King James—enjoyed sporting their custom gear while traveling. Their outfits, however, didn’t align with the team’s strict “Heat culture,” which required players to wear team-branded merchandise while traveling together.

Carlos Arroyo, on the podcast, recalled how things took a turn. “D. Wade and Bron used to wear, like, King James stuff and Dwayne County, all that stuff… And then Askins came and put a [fine] slip in their locker. They were mad.”

How mad, you ask? “They were hot as a pistol,” said Haslem on The OGs. But it didn’t end there. Just as Dwyane Wade and Bron were fuming over the fine, assistant coach Askins walked into the locker room. Before anyone could blink, Wade and Askins were squaring off, to the point that teammates had to intervene.

UD couldn’t help but find humor in the moment. “He makes $100 million. It’s a thousand-dollar fine slip… And he wants to fight… That was hilarious.” You’d see the humor in it too when you consider Wade had previously brushed off a $25,000 fine with ease.

Remember that infamous throat-slash gesture after hitting a dagger three against the Celtics? Wade knew the NBA would impose a fine on him. He even apologized on Twitter beforehand, telling his young fans, “I was caught up in the emotions of my first game at home.”

However, it’s not as if the incident with Askins had no impact on the 3x NBA champ. As per the discussion, both Bron and The Flash started wearing Heat gear after the fine and the scuffle. Something that Arroyo believes was the right move since they were the biggies of the team. And they following the Heat culture would have set an example for others.

Why did a $1,000 fine get under Dwyane Wade's skin despite his $196 million earnings?

This, however, was not the first instance that Wade almost had a feud with his coach on the Heat.

The time when Dwyane Wade got into a shouting match with Erik Spoelstra

The 2012 NBA Playoffs had their share of drama. But a few moments were as intense as the heated exchange between D-Wade and Spoelstra. The Miami Heat had just been crushed by the Indiana Pacers in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, losing 94-75. For a team with championship aspirations, it was a gut punch. And for Wade, it was even worse.

The Flash had one of the toughest nights of his career, scoring just five points on 2-of-13 shooting while coughing up five turnovers. Frustration was bound to spill over, and during the third quarter, it did—spectacularly. Wade confronted Spoelstra in the huddle, and things escalated quickly, with teammates having to step in.

This, however, wasn’t the first time these two clashed. But what we know from both aforementioned incidents is that Wade eventually knew how to settle out any difference for the greater good of the team. No wonder he won 2 championships alongside Erik and became the leading face of the Heat Culture.
