Wanting to be an actor and escape a hopeless life in Florida, Arenas Sr. had to live on the road with his son for a considerable amount of time. Facing many problems along the way, Arenas Sr. tried to stay strong. One time, the difficulties became too much to bear and tears started to flow from the elder’s face. Fortunately, the young Gilbert was there as a comforting presence.

“It’s going to be alright, Daddy,” said Gilbert Arenas. “It’s going to be OK.” Arenas Sr. was eventually able to get a job and secure a $1500 loan. As the young Gilbert kept “dribbling out on the sidewalk”, his father worked to get his family out of the crisis.

Even today, the former player remembers that moment fondly, going so far as to say, “We didn’t have much. But I never felt poor because I had my dad.”
