Just a few months ago, Dwight Howard took to social media to campaign for an NBA comeback, specifically with the Los Angeles Lakers. In a bold move, he shared a photoshopped image of himself wearing a Lakers jersey and donning his iconic Superman cape, symbolizing his readiness to “save” the struggling franchise. While it’s been two years since Howard last played in the NBA, he has continued to showcase his talents in international leagues, proving that his competitive fire still burns bright.

Despite his efforts to make a comeback, Howard has also expressed contentment with the career he’s had and a desire to prioritize his personal life. During an appearance on Gil’s Arena, the former NBA champion opened up about the sacrifices he’s made for basketball and his intention to dedicate more time to his family.

“I love the game, I’ve always loved it,” Howard shared. “I’ve put in so much work, so much time. Now I want to give that time to the kids. I done sacrificed so much time away, so I can train and do all that stuff. The kids are getting older…”

Howard has fondly reflected on his time in Taiwan’s T1 League, a chapter that reignited his love for basketball. Initially feeling disheartened by his inability to play in the NBA, Howard found new energy and excitement overseas. “Fans [in Taiwan] who never had a chance to come to see an NBA game, now they get the chance to watch us play. It’s an amazing feeling. Going over there brought me back to life,”  he shared, emphasizing how the experience revitalized his passion for the game.

In addition to his international basketball stint, Howard recently took on a new challenge by joining the reality dance competition Dancing with the Stars. The show not only showcased his versatility but also helped him achieve peak physical fitness. While he previously mentioned on Gil’s Arena that he wanted to focus on family, it seems that statement may not entirely reflect his current mindset.

Though content with his illustrious career, Howard has not officially retired. His name was recently announced as a nominee for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2025. In response to this honor, Howard made a revelation, suggesting that his basketball story might not yet be over.

Dwight Howard has spent 18 remarkable years in the NBA, leaving a lasting impact on seven different teams. Drafted by the Orlando Magic, he quickly became a franchise cornerstone, carrying the team to significant success. Howard last played in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2021-22 season. Throughout his career, he earned accolades such as three NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards and five NBA All-Defensive Team selections.

Despite his achievements, Howard has not been able to return to the league since that season—but he hasn’t given up on the game. In 2022, the 8-time NBA All-Star joined Taiwan’s T1 League to play for the Taoyuan Leopards, showcasing his continued passion for basketball. More recently, he signed with the Taiwan Mustangs, adding international accolades to his already decorated resume. Howard remains an active player and made that point clear in a recent statement.

Upon learning of his nomination for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2025, Howard expressed his gratitude while reiterating that his playing career isn’t over. “I’m not retired yet, but I’ll take it. I’m extremely grateful; I just pray they don’t do me like they did the last list,” he wrote on social media, hinting at past snubs.

With his candid remarks sparking conversation, one has to wonder: could his public statements influence the selection process? The official list of finalists is set to be revealed on February 14 during NBA All-Star Weekend. Whether Howard’s nomination turns into an induction remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Superman still has his sights set on making an impact, both on and off the court.
