If you make an embarrassing blunder in your teens, know that your parents will never let you live that down. Myles O’Neal is learning that lesson in a hilarious fashion. Shaquille O’Neal and Shaunie Henderson’s eldest son goofed up one of Shaq’s primary rules for kids – don’t upset your mom. It’s a lesson he’s given others but Myles missed the memo at 14. However, O’Neal is not worried about his kids because their mom Shaunie runs a tight ship. And now as a published author with her memoir, Undefeated, at the top of the Amazon bestseller list, she’s making sure Myles doesn’t forget his faux pas.

In a chapter of her memoir, she narrated the time Myles disobeyed her but the situation was too hilarious for Shaunie to blow up. He was a freshman at Santa Monica High School in California then, up to no good at home when Shaunie came home early by chance. She smelled the marij*ana and walked into Myles and his friend smoking.

According to her, they were so out of it that they couldn’t react to her presence except look like deer in headlights. She couldn’t break into a lecture there because it wouldn’t sink in. “I had to let Myles sober up. It was sort of funny because the two of them were talking about random stuff you talk about when you’re high,” she wrote. It was hilarious to her yet she was mad at him.

She waited till he was more coherent and his friend had left to get right into it. Teenage Myles apparently saw this as the opportunity to do a serious presentation on why Shaunie should permit him to do this because “everybody else’s parents at Santa Monica High were letting their kids” smoke. After he thinks he’s done a convincing job, Shaunie reminds him that they can’t be like his friend and his friend’s parents. If he was as disobedient to her as his friend was to his parents, “You would be going to school without your front teeth.” Needless to say, Myles never repeated his mistake. That’s why Shaq trusts his co-parent to keep their kids in line.

Shaq and Shaunie maintain a parenting balance

When Shaq meets little kids, like the basketball wunderkind Lil Mike on The Jennifer Hudson Show, he always tells them, “Listen to mommy and daddy.” He says that’s been the secret to his success while admitting that he was not always the ideal kid to his mom and stepdad.

The dad of six is pretty stern himself, especially regarding academics. The O’Neal kids got no mercy for bad grades as Shaq says they have better resources now than when he was younger. But he still said, “Not a lot of discipline is needed,” about his parenting style in a 2021 interview. “Their mothers did wonderful, beautiful jobs of that. So my job is just keeping them into the game, have fun.”

The delicate balance is showing from 14-year-old Myles’ goof-up. He’s 27 now and Shaunie is still keeping him in line.
