Some performances are too amazing to ignore, and it does not matter which side of the rivalry one is on. When two powerhouses like USC and UCLA clash on the hardwood, the stakes are unimaginably high. Emotions, of course, run deep. But from the trenches every now and then, a player emerges who transcends the moment, turning a heated rivalry into a personal cinema for greatness.

That is what happened recently when the USC’s women’s basketball team delivered a statement win against UCLA, while taking an 80-67 win in a game which solidified their first Big Ten regular-season title. And, JuJu Watkins, the freshman phenom took center stage, dropping a dominant 30-point performance proving why she is one of the most electrifying players in the country. 

In spite of Reggie Miller’s deep UCLA roots, he could not help but tip his hat to Watkins because of her electrifying performance. He took to social media and posted a story on Instagram.  Posting a picture of his sister, who was a bona fide USC legend and JuJu Watkins, captioning it, “Greatness Personified,” commenting on the wholesome link up. Watkins’ ability to take over games. Much like how Cheryl did during her storied USC career, only added to the poetic nature of the night.

Before JuJu Watkins, there was Cheryl Miller—a true pioneer of women’s basketball. Widely regarded as one of the greatest female players of all time, Miller led USC to back-to-back NCAA championships in 1983 and 1984, earning three Naismith Player of the Year awards in the process. Her dominance reshaped the sport, paving the way for future stars with her electrifying play and unmatched leadership. By the time she left USC, she had amassed 3,018 career points and 1,534 rebounds, setting records that stood for decades.

Reggie Miller’s reputation for recognizing elite talent did not just inculcate overnight. He has a keen eye for talent and is very vocal about singing their praises.  Reggie Miller has been a constant supporter of the youth, supporting present and future superstars.

Miller is not just an all-time great, he’s also one of the biggest advocates for the next generation of ballers. Over the years, he has consistently shown love and support for rising stars in the game. From NBA standouts like Trae Young and Tyrese Haliburton to promising young talents like JuJu Watkins.

Miller has always been a vocal supporter of Trae Young. He has frequently praised his shooting range and clutch shot-making ability; both reminiscent of Miller’s own playing style. He even gave Young a stamp of approval early in his career, dubbing him a “cold-blooded assassin” after multiple clutch game-winning performances.

Similarly, Miller has taken notice of Tyrese Haliburton. He lauded the Pacers guard for his high basketball IQ, leadership, and ability to control the pace of a game. Haliburton has drawn comparisons to some of the great playmakers in league history. And now, he has earned Miller’s admiration for his efficient scoring and elite passing ability.

By hyping up JuJu Watkins after her dominant showing, Miller once again proves that he has an eye for greatness. He understands what it takes to be special in this game, and when he speaks, people listen. Watkins is in elite company among the young stars he’s backed. And if history is any indication, that’s a very good sign for her future.
