Gilbert Arenas ignored NBA warnings—heroic stand or selfish act? What's your take?

You’re in for an adventurous ride when with Gilbert Arenas. A wild one, for sure. And that may land you in trouble sometimes, although he gets the brunt of it. Like the time he got caught bringing an unwelcome guest into the Washington Wizards’ locker room. Later, another one of his NSFW gestures went down with his former teammate Andray Blatche in a serious issue involving $10,000.

Back in 2010, ‘Agent Zero’ made quite a stir when he was caught in possession of an unloaded gun. He stated that he wasn’t aware of the particular law, and it seems he wasn’t familiar with the seriousness of the issue as well. In January of the same year, Arenas pointed his finger at his teammates as if he were shooting them.

Blatche, along with the rest, laughed at the gesture and pretended they were being shot. What’s next? They did get hit. While not with bullets, but with a huge fine. During an appearance at Dwight Howard’s ‘DH12 Above the Rim’, Blatche made a hilarious claim that he is still reeling from that huge fine and that Arenas still owes him.

He revealed that Arenas was supposed to pay the $35 k that he had to pay for the court. “Gilbert, like, you owe me some money. Gilbert said, all right, I’m going to take care of your portion,” Blatche said. But it appears he didn’t.

Blatche can’t be blamed, it was quite a lot of money. It took Arenas much time to understand the seriousness of the situation. Later, he even sacrificed $40 million to fix it.

Have an interesting take?

One thing that ‘Agent Zero’ feared was court time, and he wanted to avoid it at all costs, even if it meant sacrificing his $40 million deal with Adidas. In an interview with DJ Vlad, Arenas claimed that due to his fear of court time, he once pled to a felony. “It wasn’t a cop thing, it was an NBA thing. So I thought this is going to stop me from (going to court). But I end up going to court,” Arenas confessed. As a result, he lost his Adidas deal.

The court suspended the sentence of 18 months in prison but he got two years of probation, including 30 days in a halfway house. Apart from 400 hours of community service, he was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine to a fund for victims of violence.

After realizing his mistake, he has worked hard to make improvements. Starting from scratch, the Washington Wizards star rebuilt his reputation to regain his Adidas deal. Arenas indeed made a mistake, but he has put in the effort to make up for it. And regarding Blatche’s money, he will probably have to wait for some more time.
