Often accusing the NBA of having gotten rid of all the aggression, Gilbert Arenas was himself once hesitant to join Ice Cube’s Big3 league because of a similar reason. However, it was not the star himself but the rules that sort of gave a freehand to aggression in the tourney. The player in question had a reputation for being rough during his days in the NBA. He was so tenacious because, in college, he knew the only way he’d make it to the NBA was through hustling and running down loose balls. That scared Agent Zero.

The player in discussion is Reggie Evans, as revealed by Arenas in an episode of Gil’s Arena. “My whole complaint, 100%. All had to do with Reggie,” he said on the podcast. And this was despite the fact Gil had not even yet played against Evans, but just witnessed what he could do.

“I’m reading the rules and I’m like, ‘All right, so unlimited fouls, huh?… I called Cube, I said, ‘Wait, hold on. So y’all just gonna let Reggie have unlimited foul?’ I was like, ‘Oh, dog, I don’t even know if I want this contract. I don’t want to have to play against Reggie at all,” Arenas said. But despite everything said, Arenas actually debuted in the Big3 tournament in 2019 from team ‘Enemies’. He could only manage 12 points in the game, which included 4 for 10 shooting, but the enemies secured a 50-45 win against the ‘Ball Hogs’.

Gil encountered Reggie Evans’ 3-Headed Monsters in week 8 of the tourney but lost the game by 32-50. However, Arenas signing the contract should not make it seem his concern for Evans seems an overreaction. Notably, the Bleacher Reporter in a 2011 article mentioned The Collector among the “50 Most Intimidating NBA Players of All Time”.

As decent a rebounder as Evans was, he is mostly remembered for his no-nonsense approach on the court. During a playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers, while playing for the Denver Nuggets, Evans grabbed Chris Kaman’s testicles. However, Kaman did not let it slide, as he pushed the Nuggets star, making him fall onto the court.

“With what we’re trying to do, I didn’t want to get thrown out… I thought about it, but I knew what would happen. One of the refs said he would have knocked [him] out. It was crazy,” the Clippers star said back then.

Although Kaman received the foul for pushing Reggie, when the whole incident came to light, the league fined Evans $10,000. Now, this incident in itself is a sufficient testament that Gilbert Arenas was not concerned for nothing against Reggie Evans.
