The year 2025 is packed for Gabrielle Union, and to start off the year, she’s stepping into the world of dark comedy with Riff Raff. The film brings together an unexpected mix of stars, including Bill Murray, Pete Davidson, Ed Harris, and Regina Hall. A film with a star cast like this should be a box office hit, right? Unfortunately, the film had a slow start, and its first weekend grossed less than $1 million.

How did the movie do at the box office? Despite its star power, Riff Raff had a rough opening weekend, bringing in just $901,000 at the box office. With only 1,004 screens showing the film, it struggled to compete with bigger releases. Surprisingly, it finished in the #13 spot but came close to cracking the top 10. Audience reactions have been mixed, with the film earning 56% from critics. And what’s more? Even general viewers on Rotten Tomatoes gave it only 55%. But for Union, it was Bill Murray who made this movie special.

Recently, Gabrielle Union appeared in an interview with JoBlo Celebrity Interviews. There, she discussed how it was like to work with Bill Murray in a rather unique role. This led her to recall an old incident: “We found ourselves sharing a couch with Bill Murray and Don Rickles… It was like a comedy roast”. That history made their on-set dynamic even better, and it shows in the film. She wasn’t sure if Murray would even remember.

But the moment he arrived on set, he greeted her like an old friend. “That’s my girl, Gav,” he said, catching her off guard. The biggest surprise? Seeing Murray play such a different role. “I grew up on Caddyshack and Ghostbusters… He gave you different stuff,” Union explained. Fans expecting his usual lovable, goofy persona are in for something completely different. And with Pete Davidson adding his own chaotic energy, every scene feels fresh. Box office aside, it was a magical experience for Union!
