If not for an NBA ring, the Raptors legend Tracy McGrady achieved everything to become an NBA Hall of Famer. Although the 45-year-old bid farewell to the game without any championship under his name, McGrady did not stop pursuing his championship dream. In December 2024, McGrady partnered with another NBA legend Vince Carter to buy a minority stake in the Buffalo Bills. And ideally, when you invest in a franchise, unwavering loyalty to the team follows automatically. However, this does not seem to be the case for McGrady.
Imagine putting your money into something big, only to realize you might have to trade in your personal preferences along the way. That seems to be the situation for Tracy McGrady. At least, that’s how he put it. It’s not uncommon for former athletes to invest in sports outside of their own. Magic Johnson became a co-owner of the LA Dodgers, and Alex Rodriguez took a minority stake in the Timberwolves and Lynx. Both are extremely passionate about their teams. But when it comes to McGrady, let’s just say Bills fans might not be too thrilled with their new co-owner’s latest take.
“I’m excited to share that I’ve joined the Buffalo Bills organization as a minority owner—a dream come true for me and my family. Sports have been a lifelong passion, and the chance to contribute to such a top-tier organization is a true honor,” McGrady said after becoming one of the co-owners of the Bills last year. Although jokingly, the NBA legend did not sugarcoat his words when asked if he has fully embraced the Bills during his appearance on the Makeshift Project Podcast.

With a smirk, T-Mac admitted, “Forced to be a Bills fan, for sure.” That little remark carried more humor than resistance. But it still raises an interesting point about how deep an owner’s loyalty has to run.
While McGrady’s stake makes headlines, the real power remains with Terry and Kim Pegula, who still control the franchise. The move to bring in minority shareholders marks a historic shift for the Bills, but how much say do they really have? When the Bills first announced the new investors last year, it was a historic move: the first time the franchise had brought in minority shareholders. However, the exact percentage each investor holds remains undisclosed.

McGrady and Carter aren’t alone in this new venture. Soccer icon Jozy Altidore, an MLS champion with Toronto FC, also joined the ownership ranks, forming a trio of sports legends with Toronto ties now linked to the Bills. So, while McGrady might joke about his “forced” fandom, something tells us he’s not regretting the investment.

McGrady has always believed in betting on himself, and that belief took him to new heights. This time, in the NFL. The Hall of Famer, after officially joining the Bills ownership group as a minority owner, called it a “dream come true” for him and his family.
Sharing the news on Instagram, McGrady reflected on the significance of the moment. He said he fully embraces the opportunity and understands its gravity. He further stated his hope that his journey inspires others to chase their dreams, reminding everyone, “If you can dream it, you can live it.”
The seven-time NBA All-Star made it clear that this step wasn’t just about business—it was about passion. He further expressed his excitement about being part of a “top-tier organization” like the Bills, seeing it as an honor to contribute to a franchise with such a rich history.
To McGrady, this wasn’t just an investment; it was a chance to be part of something bigger. “I’m incredibly proud to be part of the journey,” he concluded, making it clear that this new role means more to him than just a title. So the chances that his support of the Bills comes out of pressure are thin.
Does ownership truly demand loyalty, or is it just another business move? Drop your thoughts. Do you think McGrady will embrace Bills Mafia, or is he just in it for the business?
