Already dissatisfied with Tim Duncan’s absence, Bobby Portis Jr. has no faith in teammate Giannis Antetokounmpo’s claims. The Milwaukee Bucks star recently expressed his desire to be a head coach once he retires as a player. “I want to be a head coach. I really want to be,” Antetokounmpo told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Portis, however, had a strong opinion about the intent and validity of this claim.

The conversation emerged during Portis’ appearance on the Run It Back podcast. The Bucks forward was asked for his opinion on Giannis Antetokounmpo’s coaching aspirations. “I’m just calling Cap… He just talking…” Portis hilariously said. He mentioned The Greek Freak knows how to get the media going.

“He gonna be somewhere in Greece with all his 100 kids… They gonna be chilling…” Bobby added. The 2021 NBA champ further used San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan’s long absence from any franchise role in the league as an example. “Where is Tim Duncan at? We don’t see Tim Duncan… We ain’t gonna see Giannis after he done…” he said on the podcast.

The NBA star’s comments stem from the fact that Duncan took over the role of an assistant coach with the Spurs almost three years after his retirement. But after serving from 2016 to 2020, the 5x NBA champ vanished himself from the NBA waters completely. And it’s not because of a lack of opportunities. If anything, Gregg Popovich admitted back in 2022 that there came a time when he “gave up” on trying to get Duncan to coach.

The Spurs legend was, however, spotted quite a few times enjoying his life away from NBA hardwood. This included the time when a video of Duncan soaked in the water, doing wake surfboarding surfaced on social media platforms last year.

Portis believes this is what life would be for Giannis Antetokounmpo. But that’s not necessarily true, even considering Bobby’s Tim Duncan example. Mostly because the 5x NBA champ has gotten involved back with the Spurs, even if not in an official capacity.

Tim Duncan’s return to San Antonio might spur Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future aspirations

Remember the buzz back in 2023? NBA insider Marc Stein had fans excited when he reported that Spurs icons Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili would step in to mentor rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama. The idea of Wemby learning from three Hall of Famers was almost too good to be true.

Now, even though Duncan wasn’t officially rejoining the team, he was expected to work with the Spurs for the first time since his assistant coaching days in 2019-20. But after that initial excitement, updates became scarce.

But just last month, Duncan was spotted at the Spurs’ practice facility again. While we are still to see Duncan accept a more stable role with the franchise, there is no reason to believe Giannis Antetokounmpo, too, will distance himself from the league after retirement.
