“When you’re righteous, you don’t have to tell people that you’re righteous” Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t just say it, he lives by its principle. From buying a minivan for a homeless man to supplying schools with essentials during COVID, he’s done it all. But most people only see his $500 million fortune and larger-than-life personality. And what about the man behind the generosity? That’s a story only his close ones know. And now, former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy is stepping forward to show the world the real Shaq, the one who gives without seeking credit.

Shaquille O’Neal played for six teams over his legendary 19-year career, earning nearly $290 million in salary and over $200 million in endorsements. But his impact didn’t stop there. With a sharp business mind, the 4x NBA champion built an empire of his own, owning 50 brands across various industries. As of March 2025, his net worth stands at $500 million. But here’s the thing, Shaq doesn’t care about the money or the fame anymore. At this stage in life, he’s all about one thing: giving back.

In a recent episode of the Hold My Banner podcast, former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy pulled back the curtain on Shaquille O’Neal. He talked about the good, the bad, and everything in between. HKicking things off with seriousness on his face, he said, “I mean see Shaq, Shaq doesn’t do much quietly like he’s everywhere. If there’s a commercial Shaq’s in it. Like I don’t know are there five products in the world that Shaq doesn’t endorse” And he is not completely wrong though. With over 50 brands and endorsements under his belt, Shaq is everywhere. But then, Van Gundy got real. He revealed the side of Shaq most people don’t see, the part that isn’t just a pawn of fame and fortune.

Van Gundy didn’t stop at Shaq’s larger-than-life presence. He dug deeper, revealing a side most don’t see. Gundy said some things about Shaq that just stole the show. He said, “But the quiet part is Shaq does so much for so many people quietly I mean he’s just been one of the more giving former athletes there’s ever been”

That’s the real Shaquille O’Neal for you. He is the one who doesn’t seek credit, the one who changes lives behind the scenes. While the world sees a basketball icon, a businessman, and an endorsement king, those close to him know the truth. You would be completely wrong if you think Shaq is all about fame and a larger-than-life persona. Shaq has never been just about success, he’s about impact.

Shaquille O’Neal making a difference through The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation

The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation isn’t just about giving back, it’s about building dreams for those who don’t have the backup to fulfill them. Since 2019, Shaq has been on a mission to uplift underserved youth, proving his legacy stretches far beyond basketball. From the Boys & Girls Clubs to Communities in Schools and his heartwarming Shaq-a-Claus holiday event, he’s making sure no kid is left behind.

But here’s the thing, Shaq doesn’t do it for attention. Shaq confessed, “I just like to make people laugh and make them smile.”  Isn’t that great? He also said, “I try to find out what they need and take care of it. I don’t like to talk about my philanthropy work and say,  did this… I did that…’ it’s not important. What’s important is that you helped the people that needed to be helped”
