Following Steve Kerr?s Surprising Confession, 2022?23?s Coach of the Year Reveals Biggest Lesson Learnt From 9x Champion

The Pacific Division is arguably the toughest division currently in the NBA. The Sacramento Kings, who were the weakest in the group for a decade, took big strides in the 2022?2023 NBA season. They ended their 16-year playoff drought and made it under new head coach Mike Brown. The Kings went toe to toe against Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs.

Because of the improvement the team made last year, Mike Brown won the Coach of the Year award. Having spent years with Steve Kerr on the coaching staff of the Warriors, Brown recently revealed the biggest lessons he has learned from him.

Steve Kerr makes everything easy for his team

In the newest episode of ALL THE SMOKE podcast by Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes, Mike Brown joined in to talk about his team. Before becoming the head coach of the Kings, Brown was an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. He has spent years under Steve Kerr and learned from him.

This made Matt Barnes ask what he learned from his coaching position with the Warriors. Brown compared Steve Kerr to Gregg Popovich. He said that Kerr is one of the best messengers in the league.

When Brown was a young coach in the league in the late 2000s, he believed that working harder than everyone else would make your team and the players better. But there was more to it. Steve Kerr knew exactly how to make his players motivated with just his words.

“Steve’s ability to message to the crew on a daily basis was unbelievable… Every day I used to carry a little pad, a little notebook pad or paper in my pocket, and a pen too because when he talked to the team, I was like dang. That’s on point. It’s simple, but it’s on point“.

Brown learned a lot from his time under Steve Kerr and is now using that experience to coach the Kings. This even led to him being the first-ever unanimous Coach of the Year award winner.

Is Steve not ready to make a decision?

Steve Kerr is in the last year of his contract. So everyone is wondering why he still has not signed an extension with the Warriors.

When asked about it before their game against the Suns on opening night, Kerr just brushed past it and said that he just wanted to focus on the game at hand. But Steve Kerr then said that he has a great relationship with the organization and that he can even get the contract done on the last day of the season, and that’s fine with him.
