Shaquille O’Neal?has always been viewed as a friendly giant by most. Known for helping the community and having a big heart, the Los Angeles Lakers legend is adored by many. Eluding a friendly and carefree attitude, not many can picture Shaq being violent. But while he may be peaceful in his approach, a person with Shaq’s stature can easily knock out most individuals. This almost turned into reality 15 years ago when Shaq vied off against a 7’6 giant on live TV.

In the various public appearances he’s made over the years, Shaq has always been seen as a figure of peace and tranquility. However, he had quite a few outbursts during his playing days.

Shaquille O’Neal and Co. got into it during a matchup against the Houston Rockets

During a game between the Phoenix Suns and the Houston Rockets in November 2008, players from both teams got into an altercation that resulted in a massive farce. It was Rockets guard Rafer Alston that commenced the skirmish after he brought down Steve Nash.

This led to the two holding their jerseys while the rest of their teammates scurried around the court. Then Suns forward Matt Barnes was one of the first to instigate the conflict, which resulted in most players joining the fight.

Both teams had their own giants on the court as Shaquille O’Neal and Yao Ming rushed into the scrimmage with the aid of their teammates. Shaq was visibly upset as he pushed through the crowd of players, including Ming, who was thrown on top of Tracy McGrady during the hubbub.

Shaq recently posted a clip of this altercation on his Instagram as he flaunted his ruthlessness to his 31.5 million followers. While Shaq’s violent demeanor did not result in any injuries, it did bring a jam-packed US Airways Center to a standstill. The 4x NBA champion put himself in harm’s way to shield his teammates from the oncoming Houston barrage.

How did the game end?

While the headlines were all about the altercation, the game still went on and finished in the favor of the Rockets. Winning by a score of 94-82, the game wasn’t a close one as Tracy McGrady led the team with 27 points. The skirmish saw Steve Nash, Matt Barnes, and Rafer Alston all get handed a suspension.

Meanwhile, Shaq ($35,000) and TMac ($25,000) were subjected to a fine for their involvement in the mid-game altercation. The Suns missed out on a Playoff spot that year, while the Rockets lost to the eventual champions Los Angeles Lakers in 7 games in the Conference Semis.
