Alijah Arenas is making his parents proud! The 18-year-old has achieved some of the highest high school honors. He has even earned a spot on the McDonald’s All-American Game roster. Just recently, he set yet another record, which was followed by a series of his hilarious antics. Despite his long list of accolades, the former NBA player believes that his son can’t be compared to the Duke star, who is the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. And he seems to have a reason.

Gilbert Arenas shared this view during his interview on The Dan Patrick Show. When the host asked if he had ever compared his eldest son, Alijah, to the rising basketball star Cooper Flagg or if he expected Alijah to reach that level, he made a surprising response. The former NBA player cleverly remarked that most parents make that same mistake. He believes kids can’t be compared to players like Flagg. What kind of player is the National high school player of the year and McDonald’s All-American, Flagg?

Arenas explained, “Cooper flag is one of those rare kids where you can’t build the blueprint off of them…Cooper Flagg will be successful.” He further doubled down on his claim that Flagg would be the No. 1 draft pick. Gilbert further clarified his point, “He will be the number one pick and people say if AJ was in this draft he would be the number one pick. Yeah, right! I’m sorry just Cooper Flagg has an engine you can’t teach, right? You can teach him skill, you can teach him the game, you can’t teach how hard he plays this game and 17, now 18, I’m drafting him number one.”

Meanwhile, Arenas is in high school. Even at this level, he is breaking records set by his father. In his third season at Chatsworth, he averaged 31.8 points and 8.5 rebounds. Instead of choosing his father’s alma mater, Arizona, he has committed to USC as his next destination. And he is determined to make a name for himself.

He hilariously asked his father to contact his assistant before talking to him. Alijah had also switched his messaging status from iMessage to regular SMS with his father. “Yeah, he already hit me and said, ‘Yeah, talk to my assistant. I’m on the billboard in Times Square.’ My s**t going to green (chat bubbles). I’m going to green now, I used to be blue. This n***a done changed his number. He did a me, on me,” the former Golden State Warriors player said.
