Did we see it coming? Caitlin Clark really hit the reset button during the Olympics break and transformed into a powerhouse for the games defeating Mercury. Apart from the ROTY honor, the Indiana Fever rookie is now also in the MVP conversation. Among the many believers is former NBA player Rashad McCants, who has doubled down on his previous claim that Clark is fully deserving of the WNBA MVP title.

After A’ja Wilson, the 2X AP Player of the Year is currently the second favorite to win the honor. Responding to a clip from Gils Arena podcast which shows the crew’s discussion on the matter, McCants wrote, “They gonna respect her whether they like it or not!!!!! Watch!!”

Well, so far, nothing about Clark has been without its critics. Gilbert Arenas’ squad including McCants also had a heated debate on who would win the WNBA MVP. Former Sparks player Lexie Brown feels that Wilson is more likely to win the MVP title, an opinion that many other basketball enthusiasts would support. 

However, Clark’s case is also compelling, as McCants pointed out. She is setting new records in the pro league. “She’s like, no, I’m going to chase that MVP because ain’t nobody fix it for me. She’s broken records already, bro. already… What are y’all talking about?… you discrediting her? She has changed the game. That alone as a rookie!” McCants said.

After surpassing WNBA legend Sue Bird to amass 400 points and 200 assists, Clark has now broken Courtney Vandersloot’s record with 19 assists.

Should Caitlin Clark be in the WNBA MVP conversation?

As Brown previously highlighted, Wilson has an impressive record that might be difficult for Clark to surpass this year. But then we don’t know yet. The Fever rookie has done enough to be part of the discussion. Despite a slow start to the season, Clark has elevated her team, and the chances look bright for the Fever to secure a playoff spot, a position they haven’t clinched since 2016.

ESPN sports analyst Gary Striewski also noted Clark’s record-breaking performance. With 12 games remaining for the Fever, she still has every opportunity to turn the tables. While Striewski believes Wilson or Stewart might be more deserving of the honor, the analyst alluded that Clark is certainly deserving of being part of the conversation. 

“I’m done talking about the Rookie of the Year. She should also be in the MVP conversation. I know it’s going to be A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart. It’s a loaded crop of players. But I don’t think you can make an argument as to why she shouldn’t be in the conversation,” Striewski said on the Elle Duncan Show.

Clark has indeed consistently shown why she is a contender for Rookie of the Year or MVP.
