Nick Van Exel's dig at Shaq's acting—Is he right, or is Shaq underrated in Hollywood?

The glamour of Hollywood has always waved over professional athletes, especially the NBA players, since they have shown the most eagerness to test their skills on the silver screen. From the NBA legend Michael Jordan‘s role in Space Jam to Ray Allen’s great performance in He Got Game, basketball stars have shown carrying degrees of success in their cinematic pursuits. However, as one former Los Angeles Lakers player pointed out, having a game on the court doesn’t always translate to having one in front of the camera.

In the recent episode of Byron Scott’s Fast Break, host Kid J put a question on the table for the 63-year-old Lakers veteran Byron Scott: What are his top five sports movies? Byron was quick to answer this but had a twist at the end. “My last one is Blue Chips. You know Shaq, Penny Hardaway you know that guys so that’s another one that I really enjoy so that’s my top five, said Scott during the podcast. The other movies that he named were Remember the Titans, Rudy, Any Given Sunday, and Hoosiers. But what was the twist in his answer?

Although the former shooting guard mentioned Blue Chips as one of his favorite movies he was kind of adamant about agreeing with the fact that Shaquille O’Neal did a great job in acting on that movie. So what was the role of Big Diesel in the movie? His role in Blue Chips was that of Neon Boudeaux who is a talented but troubled high school basketball player. However, Neon’s personal struggles, including academic difficulties and involvement in illegal activities, threaten to derail his career and the team’s chances of winning. “I didn’t say that… Diesel. I didn’t say that. I ain’t saying you ain’t either. I’m just saying it was one of my top five movies as far as sports movies to go,” said Scott during the podcast.

The former NBA champion, however, didn’t get into any detail as to why he thought that Shaq didn’t excel that much in acting but it can be speculated that it was only his personal opinion. However, the silver screen isn’t the only off-court activity that the seven-footer has set his foot on. During his playing days, the Lakers veteran had released multiple rap albums that had received gold and platinum certifications. Moreover, his current off-court stint is that of an EDM artist by the name of DJ Diesel and he’s excelling in this field too.

Byron Scott’s comments serve as a reminder that even legendary athletes have room for growth and critique outside their primary field of expertise. However, did you know the former Lakers veteran also talked about the other movies that he liked?

While he was finished mentioning his top five favorite sports movies, Scott asked the same question to his co-host. The former Laker who has a deep appreciation for sports films himself, found common ground with Kid J’s choices.

One of the movies that hit the common ground was A League of Their Own and Scott even expressed his love for one of the cast’s acting skills. “That was a good one. I love that one though. I love that cause Tom Hanks was so good, you know. And I’m a big Tom Hanks fan. I love Tom Hanks. I love all the movies he does,” said Scott during the podcast. Another movie that they both liked was the all-time classic Rocky Series.
