The Atlanta Hawks could have won a championship. This is what Trae Young believes would have happened in 2021 if he had not gone down with an injury against the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 Eastern Conference finals. Although no one can know how things would have turned out if Young played all 6 games, Lou Williams, who shared the court with him during the playoff run, agrees with Young.

Listen, I’m with Trae. The reason being, we really felt like we couldn’t lose at that point. We were shooting the ball well… we felt like we were peaking at the right moment, we were rolling at the right moment, and we had a really good group… So Trae having that sense of feeling like we could’ve won a championship, I was right there with him,” said Lou Wiliams on Run It Back when reacting to the comments made by Trae Young.

The Atlanta Hawks made it to the conference finals by going through Joel Embiid. They had already taken down one dominant big man on their path, so why not another in Giannis Antetokounmpo? The Hawks were right there. But things went sideways as Trae Young went down with an injury in Game 3 of the conference finals.

But the odds were again evened out in game 4. This time Giannis Antetokounmpo went down with an injury. This meant that the star players for either team were out. So it was up to the supporting cast to get the job done. But with the series tied 2-2, the Bucks pushed forward in game 5 to take the lead and gave themselves a chance to close out the series.

In a last attempt to make a comeback, Trae Young returned to play in game 6. But the Bucks willed their way to the finals without Giannis with incredible performances from Jrue Holiday and Kris Middleton. But could the Hawks have pulled it off if Young hadn’t injured the whole series?

Lou Williams’s comments on Trae Young are not entirely true

Although Williams mentioned that the team was shooting well from beyond the arc, they were still shooting just 2% better than the Bucks. Furthermore, Trae Young did not support this shooting spree. Young struggled with his three-pointers the entire series and shot just 26.8% in the series.

Even though the Hawks made it to the final four, it is hard to classify them as a real contender as they lost back-to-back games against the Bucks when Giannis was not playing.
