NBA history recognizes the 90s as the decade of the Chicago Bulls. An indomitable duo led them to six championships in eight years. At the helm was Michael Jordan, the front of the dominant dynasty. Then there was his right-hand man, a two-way phenom in Scottie Pippen. Today, their relationship is as fragile as glass. However, when playing together, they bonded like brothers. Both were experts in their category. But who was a ‘beast’ among the two? A three-time NBA All-Star weighed in on the conversation and gave his honest opinion.
Gilbert Arenas, after remaining estranged from basketball has steamed back into the mainstream with his podcast. In a recent episode, the crew debated over a loaded topic. Which players are the ‘dawgs’ and who are the ‘beasts’? The first name on the podium was Scottie Pippen, who Arenas quickly labeled as a dawg.
Michael Jordan was the only beast for Agent Zero

Remember, during an earlier podcast, Agent Zero had Pippen as the Dream Team MVP. The iconic 1992 side had a collection of Hall of Famers from top to bottom. The likes of Charles Barkley, MJ, and Magic Johnson were a part of the legendary team. However, Pippen’s formidable ability to connect these players, to be the liaison between their egos made him the “most valuable” according to Arenas.
Despite the heaps of praise in the past, when asked if Pippen had shades of a beast, Arenas quickly denied it. His podcast mate believed it was because he assumed Pippen during Jordan’s reign. He put forth an argument of the six-time champion being a beast during the single season he spent without Michael Jordan. Surprisingly, Agent Zero couldn’t identify any beast on the Bulls except one.
“Bulls everybody was a dog besides Michael,” he said. The entire crew broke into uncontrollable laughter on hearing his confession. According to Arenas, the conversation of dogs applies to only two-way players. Scottie Pippen is arguably among the very best. Built like a tank, he was a tenacious defender who used his wing span to disrupt offenses. On the other end, he had the ability to be technical with his playmaking and shooting but also brutally slash through.
Similarly, Michael Jordan was always a commanding force on both sides of the floor. What separates the two is the magnitude at which His Airness mastered his craft. He won DPOY and the scoring title in the same season, a truly vicious beast on the loose.

Pippen was never able to rise to such heights under MJ. But in the single season that was mentioned, he showed the world that he too can be a superstar. For the first time, he averaged over 20 points per game that season, all while playing smothering defense. He ranked third in MVP voting, cementing his place as one of the greatest of the generation.

Whether Scottie Pippen was a beast like Michael Jordan remains subjective. Yet one thing is undeniable, Pippen never failed to cause terror on both ends of the floor.
