Magic Johnson caps a successful day in Chi-Town

Chicago, Illinois served the stage for Amazon’s biggest event in business, the Amazon Business Reshape in 2023. This year’s keynote speaker was already the main attraction from the second they revealed who it was. Earvin “Magic” Johnson was in the Windy City to talk about disruption and thinking outside the box to grow a business.

Johnson obviously knows the secrets behind growing a business. His side ventures during his NBA career to his post-NBA life have been all about expansion and outreach. He shared how he’s done it with over a thousand attendees in the field at the Marriot Marquis Chicago.

Amazon sought procurement leaders to fulfill this year’s theme of the two-day conference – Smart Business Buying. In true Magic Johnson fashion, the 5-time NBA champion was grateful for his hosts and organizers for making it happen on X.

“Over 1000 business leaders attended today’s Amazon Business Reshape 2023 in Chicago, IL! I was really delighted with the audience’s response to my keynote about disruption and thinking outside the box in business. Thank you to VP, Head of Strategic and Public Sectors for Amazon Business Aster Angagaw for having me today!” Magic wrote.

The speakers for the 2023 edition of Reshape was announced in June. “In his role as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Magic Johnson Enterprises, we’ll hear all about Magic Johnson’s transition from the basketball court to the boardroom and gain his unique perspective as a business leader spanning multiple industries. It’s sure to be a slam dunk (we had to),”” the early statement read. 

You can see that Amazon loves the 6’9″ legend. It’s for good reason too. Magic Johnson’s partnership with Amazon goes way back.

Magic Johnson’s business story

One of the most noteworthy things these titans have done was helping small businesses continue operating during the COVID-19 shutdown to through the “Support Small” initiative.

Though their existing goodwill didn’t stop Magic from taking Jeff Bezos’ dream of owning the Washington Commanders right from under his nose. Ownership stakes in sporting teams like the Commanders, the Dodgers,  Sparks, and LAFC have made Magic’s net worth leap from $600 million to $1.2 billion making him the fourth athlete in the club started by old friend Michael Jordan.

His savvy investments in Starbucks, Burger King, 24 Hour Fitness and Equitrust added to that. His investment also aids his philanthropic pursuits. Alongside Amazon, Magic launched an initiative to financially support minority-owned small businesses through Equitrust in 2020.
