Gabrielle Union has had a great career, but not an easy one. While strutting around New York looking undeniably fabulous in Burberry, Dwyane Wade’s wife got honest with a passing interviewer. She channeled spring in a chic ensemble, complete with an olive leather coat on her shoulders as she’s just too awesome to put her arms into the sleeves.

Union was at CBS Studios where she’s promoting her beauty brand for babies and women of color. A YouTuber well-known in celebrity circles asked her, “What’s one obstacle you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?” The mother of one didn’t mince words about it. “The biggest obstacle is race and you can’t overcome it.”

Union has been honest about facing discrimination in acting circles and also in other fields. While it’s not easy to get rid of it, she has her way of getting through it and thriving. “I never try to separate myself from my blackness.” That earned a justified “wow” from her interviewer.

Gabrielle Union has been vocal about enduring these obstacles in her career. Nothing tells her story better than her 2023 documentary, Gabrielle Union: My Journey to 50.

Prominently, she claimed she was booted off America’s Got Talent for raising racism and sexism concerns behind the scenes. She also had a brief falling out with the host, Terry Crews for not supporting her. She and Crews have since patched up.

Taraji P. Henson made waves for expressing the racism she continues to face at the prime of her career. Union was among her many famous friends who voiced their support for her. D-Wade’s wife also made a series of trendy posts taking digs at the pay inequality in Hollywood.

After dazzling in Burberry at London Fashion Week, Union kept it going in New York. She promoted Proudly, the hair and skincare line she launched with her husband at CBS. The muse is in the Union-Wade house, aka their five-year-old daughter, Kaavia.

Proudly answers the gap in the baby care market for children of color and their textured hair. Inclusivity is showcased prominently in Union’s brand. That was not all on Gab’s NYC to-do list.
