A purpose-driven, multi-faceted career after retiring from the NBA is what makes Dwyane Wade an Icon of Impact. That became official when Porsche flew him out to Texas for the 2024 SXSW summit. The conference also served as the hosts of the premiere of his wife’s latest production foray. Wade is eager to expand his horizons both with Gabrielle Union and his own post-NBA life. And he’s grateful for the acknowledgement.

Along with glimpses of his time in Austin, Wade expressed his gratitude to Porsche and SXSW for the opportunity. “It was an honor to speak business and the importance of community at @sxsw in Austin earlier this month. Since retiring, I have been ultra focused on building my portfolio and creating even more opportunities for my family and for the communities I’m a part of.

As he said at the event, he is not slowing down and is going to find more communities to be part of, a message he reiterates in his post. “Still more work to be done, but thankful for the accomplishments I’ve been able to achieve beyond the court.”

He tagged the sponsors of the event, Porsche, a brand that’s special to him. He made a special mention of Porsche during his talk, how it gives him the feeling of freedom, and his desire to forge a partnership with the Porsche family. “I wanted to be a part of that community, you know what I mean? Like, because when I see Porsche, I see freedom.”

He referenced his work with Versace and furthering his advocacy for LGBTQ+ youth through them. They, of course, talked about his NBA career and his life after that. But there’s also one of his other interests that was the highlight of this event.

The founder and owner of Wade Cellars is part of a new community. After he joined the UC Davis Executive Leadership Board for the Department of Viticulture and Enology in 2021, he revealed his goals for that role at SXSW 2024.

He wanted to gain firsthand knowledge of the wine industry which he got on the board. But he also wanted to promote diversity in the business which led him to designing a program at UC Davis. “One of the programs that I was able to create was actually bringing minorities to UC Davis and taking us through a program of the wine process of learning everything.

He expressed a fair degree of pride seeing his program draw a diverse body of students and create a community of viticulture enthusiasts. Again, he expressed his desire to make a diverse community in the wine industry and grow the number of Black-owned wineries in the country.
