Flau'jae Johnson's bold move at the ESPYs—Is she the next big thing in sports?

Rename the ESPYs to the Flau’Jae Show because she left no crumbs! LSU’s reigning superstar rode the high of her debut album all the way to the 2024 ESPY Awards on Thursday night. She was not only the main performer of the night, she’s pretty much coming for Caitlin Clark’s spot. And Dwyane Wade approves. One of the hottest rookies in the WNBA right now, Angel Reese passed the LSU mantle to Johnson and she’s exceeding expectations. D-Wade is savoring every bit of the phenomenon Johnson is.

It only took him three words to summarize the Flau’jae effect at the ESPYs. “You bodied this! @Flaujae,” he wrote on X with fire emojis because of course!

It’s the clip he’s responding to that is poignant. Johnson performed the title track of her debut album, “Best of Both Worlds” at the ESPYs leaving the crowd enraptured. She also confirmed to the media on the night that she’s aiming for the #1 draft pick of the WNBA draft, an honor that LSU’s biggest rival, Caitlin Clark holds. And that’s not all on her to-do list.

Apart from blazing on the court, she’s going to dominate the music charts too, gunning for the top spots on the hottest music charts. Not an impossible dream after dropping an album after winning an NCAA championship and having the Lil Wayne as a featuring artist. What is with LSU producing athlete-rappers? Looking at you Shaq Diesel.

But Shaquille O’Neal released his first album after he was selected first overall in the 1992 NBA draft. So maybe after Reese, Johnson is following his footsteps too. Considering where it landed the formerly Bayou Barbie, D-Wade might be looking forward to it.

Have an interesting take?

Johnson and Reese were a formidable duo at LSU before the senior went to the WNBA. Reese was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 draft, landing in Chicago Sky which has a new co-owner, Dwyane Wade since 2023. From the first second, Wade and his daughters have been relentless fans of the Sky rookie.

Reese has been elevating Sky while making WNBA history with a new double-double record. She’s formed a new on-court partnership with Chennedy Carter in tackling Clark. Johnson must be missing their own partnership and made it known with a shoutout to her favorite teammate at the ESPYs. “Keep me a double, I feel like I’m Reese,” was a line in her performance with a subtle reference to Chi Barbie’s record for most consecutive double-double in the league.

What we wouldn’t give to see Angel and Flau’jae in the same team again. Maybe Sky’s boss could make it happen.
