Dwyane Wade forced to spend on basics—Is this $10 billion Olympics initiative going too far?

Paris’ initiative to cut down on the Olympics budget seems to be taking a toll on broadcasters and athletes alike. Notably, the reports state that the Paris Olympics will induce a cost of approx. $10 Billion. The most recent victim of the cost-cutting? NBC’s Olympic basketball commentator at the Paris Games — Dwyane Wade. The former Miami Heat star’s difficulty made him go shopping after a sleepless night in the city. D-Wade, alongside his security guy, was out for some casual outing and to get an appliance of need, it seems.

After stopping by at KFC for a meal, the 3x NBA champ went to the mall. “… I needed a fan for my room,” read the caption to his IG story. In another IG story, Dwyane Wade stated his AC was out the night before, and thus the shopping for the fan. Considering this, his previous story of moving through the streets captioned “When you didn’t get any sleep last night makes sense.”

Paris Olympics infrastructure in-charge, Yann Krysinksi, had already updated that athletes will not be having ACs in their accommodations. Seemingly, the move comes as an attempt to cut down on the carbon footprint. “We don’t need air conditioning in these buildings because we oriented the facades so that they wouldn’t get too much sun during the summer. And the facades, the insulation is really efficient,” Yann Krysinksi told Reuters.

However, some reports have suggested that the Paris Olympics could be the hottest games in history. Mainly because of the reported rise in average temperatures by 5.5 degrees when the city undertook the hosting on the last instance. Following this, U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland stated the management will supply their athletes with air conditioning units.

“In our conversations with athletes, this was a very high priority and something that the athletes felt was a critical component in their performance capability…” she said during a media interaction. But it seems Dwyane Wade had hard luck that he received a faulty air conditioning unit. However, the lack of ACs isn’t the only issue the athletes have reportedly faced so far in their accommodation.

“Always looks so cheap”: A fan criticizes the living arrangements for athletes at the Paris Olympics

The main instance of criticism against the arrangements for accommodation of athletes came after Australian Tennis star Daria Saville shared a vlog of the Olympic Village. And some fans did not quite like what they saw. Criticizing the level of arrangements, some wondered if the big names of the sports industry would even be staying at the place.

“The Olympic village always looks so cheap. Tiny rooms in cramped apartments with cardboard beds and one crap open storage unit. And one bathroom between 4 rooms. I doubt the likes of Nadal will be staying in the village,” one X user wrote. Meanwhile, Australian water polo star Tilly Kearns also faced some inconvenience with the quality of mattress provided to the athletes.

In an IG post from her official account, she shared the video of the mattress while calling it “rock solid” even from the side that should be soft.
