NBA team owner Melo has a nice ring to it. And when things get sticky, the boss could sub in and nail a few threes. Carmelo Anthony is the latest NBA player who expressed a desire to get into a front-office role. And the inspiration is quite close. Dwyane Wade has dabbled in both NBA and WNBA ownership. It’s of course D-Wade’s stake in Chicago Sky that gains attention. Anthony too is advancing in pro basketball overseas but his dreams of NBA ownership hinge on his old friends.

This week on 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, his co-host The Kid Mero asked if Anthony would consider co-owning a team with Wade and LeBron James. Melo was on board if the opportunity presented. “That’s how you create what they’re talking about generational,” is how Melo described it. “That’s generational, that’s legacy if we can do that. I don’t know how cuz I’m open. I don’t know how open they are.”

He proceeded to hint that he was already working towards it. He’s meeting with investors all over the world, as far as Japan, raising funds, and building an ownership group.

Like he said, it depends on a lot of factors but Wade would be the ideal guy to lend his expertise. Out of the Banana Boat club, he’s the only one with team ownership experience. He acquired an undisclosed minority stake in the Utah Jazz in 2021. Since then, Jazz’s value has almost tripled. Bron is eager to bring the NBA expansion team to Las Vegas but those plans are still in the pipeline.

But a better example of team owner Flash is over in Chicago Sky. He bought a minority stake in his hometown’s WNBA team at an $85 million valuation in 2023. One of the first moves under his new reign was the team selecting one of the top college standouts, Angel Reese seventh overall in the 2024 WNBA draft. Reese has been on a record-breaking spree since then, making a strong case for ROTY.

Wade and his fam have been present for most of it. He and his daughters cheer Reese courtside, his wife Gabrielle Union touted her as a role model for their daughters, and their youngest Kaavia is the president of Reese’s Pieces.

Anthony hasn’t specified if he’s eyeing a particular team or even a league. It wouldn’t be bad to have him join Wade in the WNBA in some capacity.

Melo is learning the ownership ropes down under

Regardless of Wade’s work in the US leagues, Anthony is figuring things out on his own overseas. He had never shown an inclination to play pro basketball outside the NBA despite rumors of European teams’ interest. Melo though is taking his talents down under in a new role.

In June 2023, he announced a partnership with Australia’s National Basketball League. The deal includes ownership in a future expansion team within the NBL. So, he’s not a team owner yet but would be one in the future. Currently, the Team USA legend also serves as the NBL’s global ambassador of the NBL’s Next Stars program.
