At first, it seemed like just another quiet moment in Dwyane Wade’s post-retirement life—until it wasn’t. Back in December 2023, the Hall of Famer faced a gut-punch reality: he had cancer. Speaking on The WY Network Podcast in January, Wade revealed he had to undergo surgery to remove 40% of his right kidney. “It was tough for my wife,” he admitted. But even with the physical pain and fear, Wade kept pushing. In a March 11 interview on TODAY, he explained what kept him going—but the most surprising part of the story?

Wade opened up about the emotional toll the diagnosis took on everyone around him. “It was tough for my family and all my friends to see me in that capacity,” he shared. However, the same people he tried to shield ended up becoming his rock. “They don’t know in that moment that they gave me so much strength that I didn’t know that you know, was capable of someone on the outside giving because I am so prideful.” In a rare, vulnerable moment, he admitted it’s hard for people like him to ask for help. “A lot of us so prideful,” Wade said. But he made sure fans walked away with something more than just the story: “Let the people in that’s there for you. You have people in your life for a certain reason.”

While Wade is promoting others to seek help, he didn’t let anyone in at first—not even Gabrielle Union. When he got the call from his doctor, he kept it quiet. “Without telling anybody,” he went for more tests. The diagnosis came after an MRI confirmed a mass on his kidney. And his reaction? “I was like, but let’s, we’re going to go in and get you another MRI so we can make sure. And then I was, like, all right, cool. I’m still not going to tell anybody.”

But why did Wade want to hide it? “I wanted to make sure that it was, it was for real before you start, you know, getting everybody worried and concerned,” he explained. Unfortunately, Wade overlooked one key detail: “We both have the same primary care doctor.”

So naturally, Gabrielle already had a clue. “She knew I was going in and stuff of that nature, but I just kind of like tried to soft landed to her too.” However, despite the rocky start, Gabrielle and their kids became his safe space during recovery. And Gab recently opened up about just how tough that journey really was.

Gabrielle Union got Dwyane Wade’s back

To begin with, hearing the word “cancer” will knock the breath out of anyone. But for Gabrielle Union, it was more than fear—it was paralyzing. When she appeared on The View on February 27, Sunny Hostin asked what everyone had been wondering. Is Wade okay now? Union didn’t hesitate. “Yes, he’s had the surgery, and he’s cancer-free.” Relief, yes—but that wasn’t the full story. “It was a challenge,” she admitted, hinting at the emotional storm behind the calm.

“You hear cancer [and] you’re paralyzed because you think of the absolute worst-case scenario,” Union confessed. Despite knowing survivors, her brain didn’t take her there. Instead, it went somewhere darker. “I didn’t go there; I went to ‘he’s gone.’” And that thought? It’s the kind that lingers. It’s the kind that takes over before hope has a chance to speak.

Later, on TODAY with Jenna & Friends, she opened up even more about the emotional toll the diagnosis had on their family. “Obviously, him getting that diagnosis was traumatic for him,” she said. But what hit hardest was the uncertainty Wade suddenly faced. “You’re like, ‘Am I going to be here to see my family? Who am I without this big life? Without this healthy body?’”

Ultimately, that’s what made it so painful. It wasn’t just a fight for health—it was a fight to hold on to everything that mattered. And for Gabrielle? Watching her husband battle something she couldn’t fix or fight alongside him? “That was the hardest part.”
