Anthony Davis is one of the most versatile centers in the modern era of the NBA. From shooting to blocking to rebounding, The Brow has mastered everything, which has pushed the fans to open comparisons with some of the best centers in league history. After closely watching Davis’s play style, especially for the Los Angeles Lakers, fans have often compared him with Dwight Howard. Moreover, they have very similar resumes which makes the comparisons fair. However, Howard does not find it to be logical. 

Anthony Davis’s time with the Lakers is usually compared with Dwight Howard‘s prime years in Orlando. Although AD has not won a DPOY yet, the fans are aware of how good of a shot blocker he is, and his capability to guard players from one to five. Before AD, it was Howard who had the above qualities. So, widely known media house Bleacher Report, decided to question the basketball buffs, “Who’s had a better NBA career?”

Bleacher Report also gave a detailed resume of both Howard and Davis to help fans make a decision. However, Howard eliminated all the comparisons with a stinging comment. The 3x DPOY commented, “We both Great…y’all compare so much…we don’t even play the same style!” denying he and AD are the same. 

The resumes might match, but the play style doesn’t, according to Howard. The Orlando Magic icon believes he and AD belong to the same greatness. However, Howard took a subtle jab at Davis’s $190 million contract after the former’s minutes on the court was reduced, during his time with Lakers. In an interview from 2023, Howard said, “Do you expect somebody to average 15 rebounds if they playing 2 minutes a quarter? They paid Anthony Davis all that money to play at that position,” hinting at a disparity from the Lakers. Anyhow, the tables have turned now. Howard is not interested in comparisons with Davis and someone else has more to substantiate.

So what if Howard did not want to decide between him and Davis? We have Tracy McGrady, who had a clear take on why he believes Howard is better than Davis of all time. The 7x NBA All-Star had shared in an interview two years ago, “I mean you’re trying to tell me if Anthony Davis was to retire right now he has a better career than Dwight Howard? No way.”

Davis entered the league as a power forward. Later, it changed to a dual role, and now for the Lakers, he is the center. He has been a top candidate in the DPOY races but has not won it yet. At the same time, he has made it to the All-NBA Defensive Team several times. In the 2024 season, he was the only player to make it to both the All-NBA team and the All-NBA Defensive team. 

It would be tough for a fan to choose between Howard and AD, but when speaking strictly about accolades, the Magic legend has the upper hand. And that is why McGrady went on to put AD below Howard.
