Earlier this month, Dwight Howard signed with a Philippines-based team. The ex-NBA star has been looking for an opportunity to get back into the league. Unfortunately, nothing has worked in his favor so far. So, the deal with Strong Group to play in the Dubai International Basketball Championship mini tournament was another attempt toward the same goal.
Whether that has worked for him or not, we will know in time. As of now, Howard seems to be very pleased with what he was able to accomplish with his new team.
The 38-year-old shared his thoughts and feelings over the recently concluded mini tournament, giving major props to the coach of the Strong Group. He wrote, “We came together for 2 weeks, only had a few practices together, and fought all the way to the championship! Charles Tiu is a great coach 🙌🏾 and The Philippines is a great country 🙌🏾🇵🇭 Thank you all for having me and allowing me to represent your country 🫶🏾” The Strong Group was one of the participants in the mini tournament that started on 19 January and concluded yesterday 28 January.

Dwight Howard is not retiring without a fight
Howard has been out of the league since 2022, but that hasn’t affected his wish to make a comeback. Recently on his birthday in December, he made a promise to himself and his fans that he is not going to hang up his boots without playing in the NBA once again. Howard wrote, “I turned 38 today 🎈 and I thought about it lol… I’m not retiring before I have the chance to say I played in a In season tournament game lol” Still, while he has his eyes set on the prize, the league doesn’t seem to be very interested in him. There is no denying that Howard has a strong resume, yet no franchise seems to be interested in bringing in a 38-year-old player.
That doesn’t mean he hasn’t made efforts to land an NBA contract. Howard practiced with the Golden State Warriors before the 2023-24 season kicked off, but that attempt ended up being a disappointment for him. Then in December, he lobbied to secure a spot with the Detroit Pistons as they were experiencing one of their worst phases in franchise history. When arguably the worst team in the league this season passes on you, what should you do? Howard isn’t catching up on the hints.
