Almost a year ago, Dwight Howard found himself on an unexpected yet thrilling journey in the Philippines, playing for Strong Group Athletics. Grateful for the opportunity to shine again on the international stage, the former NBA champion left his mark on Filipino fans. While many hoped for Howard’s return to the NBA, those dreams didn’t materialize. Instead, rumors started swirling about a comeback—this time with Strong Group for the Dubai International Basketball Championships. After weeks of speculation, the 8-time NBA All-Star finally addressed the buzz.

Media outlets began reporting that the former Los Angeles Lakers superstar would be suiting up once more for the Strong Group in Dubai. Charles Tiu, the team’s head coach, confirmed the move through a message to ABS-CBN News.

Howard also took to social media to make it official. “I got offered to play for a couple teams in the Dubai tournament, but I can’t go against my Pinoy fans. Let’s go Strong Group!” he wrote on his X account. Adding a personal touch, he shouted out his teammates and coach with, “Let’s go Dray Live! Let’s go Boogie! Let’s go coach Charles! Stay Strong 💪🏾.”

The 6’10” powerhouse proved he’s still got it in his last stint with Strong Group, averaging a solid 17.4 points and 10.3 rebounds over eight games. Though his team fell short of claiming the title, his partnership with Kevin Quiambao—an All-Tournament honoree and Gilas Pilipinas star—gave them a championship-caliber edge. The duo came heartbreakingly close to perfection, only to be outdone by Lebanon’s squad in the finals.

This year, however, there’s an exciting twist: another former NBA star, DeMarcus Cousins, is joining Howard for the championship push. With Cousins on board and Tiu calling the shots, the Strong Group is gearing up for a serious run at the Dubai tournament title.

Howard reflects on his memorable run in the Philippines

Last year, Dwight Howard made a strong impression with the Strong Group in the Dubai International Basketball Championship, even though the team fell just short of glory. “We came together for two weeks, only had a few practices together, and fought all the way to the championship,” Howard said, reflecting on the commendable runner-up finish behind Al Riyadi. For the 3-time Defensive Player of the Year, the journey was about more than just the scoreboard—it was an experience he truly cherished.

Adding to his praise, Howard didn’t hold back his appreciation for the Philippines and their coach. “Charles Tiu is a great coach, and the Philippines is a great country. Thank you all for having me and allowing me to represent your country,” he shared. Tiu, who led the team with an exceptional coaching staff, was equally proud of his players, particularly Howard and Quiambao, for standing tall against the powerhouse Middle Eastern clubs despite coming up short.

“We’re sorry we couldn’t bring home the chip, but we hope we put on a good show,” said Tiu. Despite heartbreak from a last-second defeat, Tiu emphasized how much they appreciated the Filipino fans who cheered relentlessly. “This is just the beginning,” he promised.

Now, with Howard and DeMarcus Cousins teaming up, fans can dream again of repeating that historic run. For Strong Group, the goal is clear: championship or bust.
