NBA players enjoy a strong brotherhood amongst themselves. While rivalries are a part of competitive sports, these athletes have long-standing friendships with teammates and even opponents. Whether it be Draymond Green drawing the ire of fans for his closeness to LeBron James, or the iconic bond between Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, friendships are just as much a part of the sport.
As a result, these friends know how to light a fire under you. Appearing with Ernie Johnson 8 years before making a permanent member of the show, Chuck had some interesting comments.

Before he became the GOAT, Jordan was trying to forge his legacy in the NBA. A big part of that came down to NBA Championships. While he had clinched his first title, the second go-around was a tougher challenge. In front of him, was a similar archetype-Clyde Drexler, and the Portland Trailblazers.
However, most predictions went Michael’s side. But there was one exception. A member of the Philadelphia 76ers, and soon-to-be Phoenix Sun, Charles Barkley had a different take.
Charles Barkley picks Portland over the Bulls for the 1992 Finals

According to him, it was Portland that was going to prevail. But, when Jordan learned of his dear friend’s prediction, he laughed it off. “I know Charles, he’s trying to drive me crazy, he’s trying to make me competitive. And, I appreciate that Charles. What a great friend!”?
Regardless of his chill attitude, the comments did work. Michael’s two highest-scoring Finals series became these Finals and the following year’s, against Barkley himself.
As Ernie asked the Chuckster, Barkley continued on the same trajectory. “I love Michael like a brother…I think Portland has learned from their past mistakes”. Charles was, of course, proven wrong as Jordan went on to win the 1992 Finals, continuing his perfect record on the grandest stage. While the two bid farewell, Johnson wished Barkley the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Little did any of us know, those future endeavors would land Barkley right back in that chair.

What started as a one-off appearance as a player became a career trajectory. In 2000, Barkley joined TNT as a sports analyst. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, 23 years later, Barkley and TNT are still going strong. While he’s a regular on the basketball show, it’s not the only sport he commentates on.
The trio of Charles, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny “The Jet” Smith joined the aforementioned Ernie. Regularly, they are the best part of basketball television. Whether it’s hilarious antics, a comprehensive breakdown, or the ever-ongoing “feud” between Chuck and Diesel, the show is an absolute riot.
